Rays shutout Yanks and take series in Tampa

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

St. Petersburg,FL (Aug 1)-The New York Yankees were defeated by the Tampa Bay Rays by the score of 3-0 this afternoon. The Rays were able to take two out of three in this series and move to within one game of the first place Yankees.

CC Sabathia made the start for the Yankees and pitched 6 2/3 innings giving up three runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. If he got some help, from his defense, it may have been different and Tampa had a couple of infield singles as well. The line does not look that great but Sabathia did not pitch all that bad, the Yankees just didn’t score so it looks worse. Kerry Wood made his Yankees debut and was good striking out three batters in one inning, he gave up a hit, and two walks though. Chad Gaudin struck out the only batter he faced.

The Yankees offense did not show up today, James Shields pitched the best game of the season for him though. He pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up four hits, walking one and striking out 11. Derek Jeter had a hit, Lance Berkman had his first hit as a Yankee, and Nick Swisher had two hits. Jorge Posada had one hit. The Yankees really did not hit all that much in this series but credit has to be given to the Tampa Bay pitchers as well, they really pitched well, and what is different than in years past is they have a good bullpen. The Yankees will see them again but not until the middle of September and they will face them in two more series the last couple of weeks of the season. Those head-to-head matchups may decide the division as both teams are not able to shake the other.

The Yankees remain in first place in the AL East but only by one game and the Boston Red Sox are hanging around at 6 ½ games back. The Yankees will take on the Toronto Blue Jays for three games and then they will have a day off and face the Boston Red Sox for four games all at Yankee Stadium. The Yankee Stadium fans will be buzzing again as Alex Rodriguez is still sitting on 599 home runs and would like to get it done at home although now the wait is getting long. Rodriguez did not start today and had a pinch hit appearance and struck out on a questionable call, he argued with the umpire but it was not that heated. Rodriguez has grown more frustrated in the last couple of days, which he was not doing before. I think once he hits that home run he will relax and just get back to doing what he needs to do, drive in runs and help the team win games.
