Philadelphia, PA (Aug 6) – The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies tonight by the score of 7-5. Jon Niese started for the Mets and pitched seven innings giving up four hits and one run with five walks and seven strikeouts.
The bullpen for the Mets was awful as they blew the lead and let the Phillies take the game. Bobby Parnell pitched in the eighth inning but could not get an out. Parnell gave up four hits and four runs. Pedro Feliciano got an out but gave up two hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout. Manny Acosta got two outs giving up a hit.
Jeff Francoeur who had three hits led the Mets offense; Jose Reyes had a hit and an RBI. Angel Pagan and David Wright each had a hit and Ike Davis had two hits. Josh Thole had a hit and an RBI. Mike Hessman had three RBI with one hit.
The Phillies got on the board first in the first inning with a run on a Placido Polanco double. The Mets scored a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Reyes and in the fourth inning on a Thole single. The Mets had a 2-1 lead at this point but the Phillies would erupt for six runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-2 lead. The Phillies got five straight hits, a walk, and another hit then after an out, they got a sacrifice fly and a single. When the inning was over, they had six runs on seven hits. The Mets would score three runs in the ninth inning to make the score closer but that was it.
The Phillies have been severely depleted by injuries this season but are only 1 ½ games behind the first place Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The Phillies are the two time defending National League Champions and know how to get it done.
The Mets continue to lose and see seasons go down the drain. The only thing the Mets have done is say that their GM Omar Minaya will be back next year while teams around them like the Phillies and Yankees make deals and go for it this year. The Mets are all but out of it at this point and may be better served after this series to mostly play their younger players looking towards next year. The Mets really need two win the last two games of this series to have any chance of making a run towards the playoffs.
