By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Pittsburgh, PA (Aug 20) – The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates this evening by the score of 7-2. Mets fans think they have it tough, try being a Pirates fan as they clinched another losing season with their 82nd loss of the season.

Mike Pelfrey started for the Mets and pitched eight innings giving up two runs, one of them being earned on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Bobby Parnell pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.

The Mets offense broke out tonight with seven runs. Jose Reyes had three hits, Angel Pagan had two hits, and Carlos Beltran had a hit and two RBI. Chris Carter was hitting cleanup and he delivered two hits and two RBI, David Wright had three hits and Ike Davis had two hits and an RBI.

Josh Thole had two hits and two RBI. The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Reyes singled stole second and scored on a Carter single making it 1-0 Mets. Wright, Davis, and Thole had three singles in a row to make it 3-0.

The Mets scored two runs in the third, one on a Carter solo home run and another on a RBI single by Thole. The Mets had a 5-1 lead and scored two more in the fourth inning.

The Pirates added a run in the third inning to make it 5-2 and the Mets scored two more in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 7-2 and that was the final score. Beltran hit a two-run single to give the Mets their final runs.

The Mets will try to win their first road series of the year against an NL team tomorrow afternoon. Jon Niese will pitch against James McDonald. The Mets season is pretty much over unless they have a miracle finish but they can start to evaluate some players for next season. They have to look at the young players, if Thole, Mejia, Davis and others are keys to the Mets success, they can build around them.
