Lee haunting Yankees in different uniforms

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Arlington, TX (August 11) – The New York Yankees will face Cliff Lee for the second time this season but he is with a different team. Lee beat them the first time when he was with Seattle, throwing a complete game at the Yankees.

Lee also won the only two games of the World Series for the Phillies against the Yankees last fall. Lee has won three straight over the Yankees, the career numbers suggest he has struggled with the Yankees but not recently. Lee has been on the Yankees radar for at least a couple of years now and they thought they had a deal in place for him last month but Seattle decided to trade him to Texas at the last minute.

Here Lee is ready to face the Yankees again and maybe put them in a three game losing streak. The Yankees hope that after this game they will not see him again until the ALCS or maybe not at all. He should be in a Yankees uniform come the off-season and finally have some stability after being on his fourth team in the last calendar year. Here are the lineups, news and notes for tonight’s game.

Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Swisher (RF), Thames (DH), Rodriguez (3B), Posada (C), Kearns (LF), Berkman (1B), Gardner (CF)

Rangers Lineup: Andrus (SS), Young (3B), Hamilton (CF), Guerrero (DH), Cruz (RF), Murphy (LF), Molina (C), Moreland (1B), Guzman (2B)

The Tampa Bay Rays played this afternoon and lost so, no matter what happens tonight the Yankees will still be in first place come tomorrow. The Yankees are a game ahead of the Rays at this point and it will be a game and a half if they can beat Lee and the Rangers. The Yankees will have a two game lead in the loss column if they win tonight’s game.

It was disappointing for the Yankees to lose last night especially with Mariano Rivera on the mound. Here is what Rivera had to say. “A hit is a hit, no matter how they are. Still they are hits. Can’t do anything. Just try to make your pitches, and I tried, and it didn’t work tonight.”

A.J. Burnett did not appear to have any back issues at all last night. Here is what he had to say about his back, “It was in my mind all night. I had to really not overdo it out there and try to stay within myself. I tried to stay out there as long as I could. It never was an issue, but it’s always in the back of your mind.” Burnett made only one mistake, which was giving up the two-run homer to David Murphy who was the star of the game with the game winning hit off Rivera also.

The Yankees bullpen continues to impress with Boone Logan and Dave Robertson picking up big outs. They have been lights out for a long time now and Joba Chamberlain has not given up any runs and only one hit in his last seven appearances.

Kerry Wood has looked good striking out many opponents so maybe they have settled the bullpen. The bullpen will be a major factor down the stretch and into the playoffs if the Yankees hold on and make it.

Joe Girardi was still angry about that call in the first inning last night that was overturned. They got the call right eventually but I have never seen that especially from the home plate umpire who is so far away and I doubt there is any way that he could see the play. Girardi said it is a tough call for both umps because the first base umpire is blocked out and he does not see how the home plate umpire can see it at all. He said he has never seen that get overturned.

Nick Swisher in the fifth inning had a half slide and tried to jump over the catcher Bengie Molina, it did not work. There was a lot of criticism of the play, a lot of people thought he should of barreled over the catcher and tried to jar the ball. Joe Girardi said he did not have a problem with the play though.

If Rivera got through the first inning with not much trouble, he would have gone back out for a second inning even if the game was still tied. It just did not work out last night for them but it was a good game and the Yankees were playing without many key players.

They are still without Mark Teixeira tonight and Cano but that may just be because of the tough lefty. Granderson does not hit lefties at all and he is not going to get a chance again. I could see Granderson in the lineup tomorrow against Bruce Chen because he is a different kind of lefty.

The reason Posada was not available last night other then in an emergency was that he felt discomfort in his throwing shoulder yesterday. Girardi said he felt he needed to just give him a day because it felt funny the day before when he went to throw on a pitch out.

Girardi did say he considered using Posada to pinch hit for Cervelli in the eighth inning last night but his bad shoulder and career numbers against Frank Francisco made him decide to keep him on the bench.

Cervelli had a big hit yesterday and is hitting 317 on the season with runners in scoring position. Cervelli is a good catcher who got off to a blazing start with the bat but has gone downhill quick since then. He is still not an automatic out but his average on the season is down to the 250s.
