King Felix shuts down Yankees once again in Mariners win

By Gary W. Marchese Jr

Bronx, NY (Aug 20) – The New York Yankees were defeated by the Seattle Mariners tonight by the score of 6-0. A.J. Burnett started for the Yankees with Felix Hernandez starting for the Mariners and dominating as he has done twice before against the Yankees this season.

Burnett pitched seven innings giving up 6 runs and 12 hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Chad Gaudin pitched a perfect two innings with a strikeout.

Hernandez was looking for his fourth complete game in a row over the Yankees but he pitched eight innings giving up four hits, walking three and striking out 11.

Derek Jeter, Austin Kearns, Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher had the four hits for the Yankees. Robinson Cano, Francisco Cervelli, and Curtis Granderson each drew a walk.

The Mariners got off to a great start in the first inning with a three-run home run by Russel Branyan and they never looked back. Casey Kotchman had an RBI single in the third inning to make it 4-0 Mariners. The Mariners added a run in the fourth inning on a RBI ground out by Ichiro Suzuki and capped the scoring off with a solo home run by Branyan in the sixth inning.

The Yankees have yet to solve Hernandez this season as they are 0-3 against him and he has allowed one earned run. The Yankees are currently ½ a game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. The Rays are playing on the west coast and if they win, they will tie the division up.

The Boston Red Sox are 6 ½ games behind. The Yankees will try to even up the series tomorrow afternoon with Javier Vazquez starting against Jason Vargas. The Yankees thought they were getting good news with Alex Rodriguez back in the line-up but after one swing, he came out of the game re-aggravating his calf injury. It does not look like he will end up on the disabled list but he will be out a few more days.

The Yankees are not having a great August and they have had injuries that have become frustrating but they still have the best record in baseball.
