NYC, NY (Aug 30) – The National Hurricane Center today announced Hurricane Earl has reached category 4 strength and is traveling closer to the United States coast than downgraded Tropical Storm Danielle.
Storm trackers are predicting that Earl, packing 135 mile per hour winds, will reach the North Carolina coastal areas by mid-week. Predictions are giving a 25 to 30 percent chance that the threat will reach New York City and Long Island Beaches by this weekend.
At minimum, Hurricane Earl will bring tropical storm conditions to the area by Friday evening or early Saturday morning prompting officials in the area to prepare for emergency evacuation plans.
With anticipated regional and coastal flooding, holiday weekend travelers will find this area off-limits to vacationers. Officials added, “[sic]… Anybody living on the East Coast of the United States should really be paying attention to this storm.”
In the northeast, disaster preparedness officials are sending out alerts to homeowners in the Connecticut, Long Island, and New Jersey areas regarding both possible wind and flood damage. Coastal flooding due to storm surges is to be expected.
At this time, officials have not declared the areas as “emergency” or “mandatory” evacuation zones however, all vacationers, and residents of coastal communities are being told to prepare for immediate evacuation in the evet Hurricane Earl takes a sudden turn east, and heads closer to U.S. coastal areas or inland.
