Former President Carter Wins Release of Aijalon Gomes from North Koreans

Washington, D.C. (Aug 27) – Although former President Carter’s trip into North Korea was successful, winning release of American Aijalon Mahli Gomes, the U.S. State Department still advises against travel to the communist country.

The North Korean government granted former President Jimmy Carters request for amnesty regarding the imprisoned American citizen who wandered into North Korea territories, was arrested, and sentenced to 8 year’s hard labor. Both the former President and American prisoner have cleared North Korean airspace.

Certainly good news however, the U.S. State Department urges all American citizens to stay away from the communist style dictatorship since, the U.S. and North Korea have absolutely no diplomatic ties leaving access to American’s that find themselves in trouble while traveling overseas, nearly impossible.

The release of American Gomes marks the third such release of American citizens imprisoned in North Korean for illegal entry into the communist countries territories over the last two years.

Last year, President Clinton made a personal appearance to win the release of two American journalists, Lisa Ling, and Euna Lee, and now President Carter marking the second such journey brings home another American who found himself in the same situation.
