Flushing, NY (Aug 29) – The New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros this afternoon by the score of 5-1. R.A. Dickey made the start and pitched seven innings giving up one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless inning giving up two hits and Hisanori Takahashi closed it out with a scoreless inning giving up a hit and striking out a batter.
The Mets offense finally scored some runs as they have once again been struggling lately. Angel Pagan, Josh Thole, and Dickey each had two hits in the game. Pagan had an RBI, Luis Castillo had a hit, and an RBI and Chris Carter had a hit and a walk. David Wright had a walk, Ike Davis had a hit, and Luis Hernandez had a hit.
The Mets took control of the game in the second inning when they scored four runs. Wright walked and Davis doubled, Carter walked and Dickey singled home two runs. Pagan grounded out to score the third run and Castillo singled home the fourth run to make it 4-0 Mets.
The Astros got one run back in the top of the third on a RBI single by Michael Bourn. The Mets then, took the 5-1 lead in the sixth inning and that would be all the scoring on the day.
The Mets were able to take the series but finished the home stand at 3-3. The Mets will now head to Atlanta for a four game series and if they have any shot at all, they have to sweep the four games.
Dickey has been a bright spot for the Mets all season and continues to be so. I do not think there is any doubt he will have a spot in the rotation next season. Dickey has re-qualified for the ERA title and lowered his ERA to 2.56, which is incredible.
It is seventh in the NL between Josh Johnson of the Marlins and Ubaldo Jiminez of the Rockies. The Mets will move on to Chicago and Washington after they leave Atlanta.
