Las Vegas, NV (Aug 31) – The former First Lady of Nevada said she had many reasons for endorsing Senator Reid over his Republican opponent, but her first thought of endorsing him was during her very public divorce from Nevada Governor, Jim Gibbons. Harry Reid was the first person to call and ask her if she was “OK”. She also is fully aware that endorsing a candidate outside one’s party can open strong debate with friends and family, particularly if you are a high profile political person like Ms. Gibbons.
However, Ms. Gibbons stated in reference to her divorce, “That’s not the only reason. He’s a good, kind man, who loves his family and the state of Nevada.” Ms. Gibbons continued, “I believe Harry Reid brought positive attention to our small state by being chosen by his colleagues in 1998 to serve as Majority “Whip”, and later after winning his fourth term in the U.S. Senate, he became the Senate Democratic Leader.” She also was quick to add, “We don’t know if we will ever see that accomplished for our state by a U.S. Senator again in our life time.”
Adhering to party lines isn’t as popular as it once was. If nothing else, the Tea Party movement has brought attention to the fact we can have discussions on the issues, disagree or agree, and have political differences. When I met Ms. Gibbons the first time I knew she served in the State Assembly but because I had only heard nothing but nice things said about her, from Republicans and Democrats, I thought which party did she represent? When I shared this information with Ms. Gibbons, her response was, “Well shouldn’t it be that way?”
Ms. Gibbons has moved to Las Vegas continuing her work with charities and will begin a new position in October with Sunbelt Communications Company as their Community Relations Director.
