Yankees try and take series by the Bay

Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Oakland, CA (July 6) – The New York Yankees will try to win their second straight in Oakland and take the three game series.  The Yankees won 3-1 last night behind a strong Javier Vazquez.  CC Sabathia will be pitching tonight against Trevor Cahill in a good pitching matchup.  Here are some news and notes.

Mariano Rivera pulled himself out of next week’s All Star Game because of a knee and side injury.  Rivera stated he has been playing through it and needs the four days to rest.  Rivera has been in enough and does not need to participate anymore.  He gets the recognition of being an All Star and can go enjoy spending time with his family.  Rivera said he can still pitch this week but can’t go two innings anytime soon.

Brett Gardner is in the leadoff spot once again and he may stay there after all.  Joe Girardi said that at least against righties he would consider leaving him in that spot.  He said it would be great if he could hit up there, that he causes problems for the defense.  Gardner has had a breakthrough year but at the top of the lineup, he will be noticed more and it will be interesting to see if he could handle it.  Alfredo Aceves got another epidural today and will remain in New York for a few days.  He will be with a physical therapist then head back to Tampa.  The Yankees still hope they can avoid surgery with him.

Sergio Mitre threw two innings in a rehab outing.  The outing took place in the Gulf Coast League.  He struck out six.  Girardi has Nick Swisher at DH and Colin Curtis in right field for the second straight day.  He said the reason for that is because Swisher has done it before and Curtis has not.  Joe Girardi said that he has Jared Weaver in mind to take Sabathia’s spot on the All Star roster.  He is supposed to pitch also on Sunday so it may just be ceremonial.

Robinson Cano drew a lot of attention today.  He announced he would participate in the Home Run Derby and Alex Rodriguez told him to go ahead and do it.  Joe Girardi and batting coach Kevin Long have some concerns with it though.  I also do not like it because I think a guy like that can get caught up in it and ruin his swing for the rest of the season.  David Wright had it happen a couple of years ago and there are some others.
