Yankees provide fireworks with walk-off on the fourth of July

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (July 4) – The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 7-6 this afternoon.  The Boss George Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday at home in Tampa and must of been pleased with the outcome.

Phil Hughes started and was not great; he was named to the All Star Team before the game.  Hughes pitched six innings giving up six hits and five runs with two walks and five strikeouts.  His undoing was the home runs.  The big blow was a three-run home run by Dewayne Wise who had an eventful day.

Damaso Marte pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts and Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless inning giving up a hit and he struck out one.  Mariano Rivera blew a save pitching an inning and giving up one run and three hits.  Dave Robertson got the win pitching a scoreless inning.

The Yankees got three hits from Nick Swisher and three from Mark Teixeira.  Brett Gardner and Ramiro Pena each had two hits.  Gardner had a big two-run inside-the-park home run that Wise lost in the sun.  Marcus Thames had an RBI single, which was a walk-off.  Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Jorge Posada each had a hit and Posada had an RBI.  Posada left the game with a sprained finger and is day-to-day.

The Blue Jays got on the board first in the third inning with a solo home run by Lyle Overbay.  The Yankees answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Gardner and Pena singled and Jeter hits a sacrifice bunt for a base hit.

Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly and Rodriguez singled in a run.  The Yankees were leading 2-1.  Pena had an RBI single in the fourth to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.   The Blue Jays scored three runs in the fifth on a home run by Wise off the foul pole in right field.  It was now 4-3 Jays, the Jays would add an extra run in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead.  The bottom of the fifth inning the Yankees tied the game on an inside-the-park home run by Gardner.  It was a ball that would have been a routine fly out but Wise lost it in the sun and it rolled behind him for the home run.

The Yankees gained a game on the Red Sox and are 1 1/2 games up in the AL East.  The Yankees are heading to the West Coast now to play the Oakland Athletics in a three game series.  They will then head to Seattle to take on the Mariners for a four game series.  The Yankees will then have the All Star Break.

Before today’s game Hughes, CC Sabathia, Rivera, Cano, Jeter, and Rodriguez were all named to the All Star team.  Sabathia is pitching on Sunday so he cannot participate in the game but will go and he is going to be replaced on the roster by Andy Pettitte.  Nick Swisher is one of the five finalists who can be voted into the game.  The final announcement will be made on Thursday.  If Swisher makes it that will be eight Yankees on the team.
