Yankees News and Notes from a crazy day in Seattle

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Seattle, WA (July 9)-The New York Yankees had a very strange day today.  They appeared to have a deal in place for Seattle starter Cliff Lee who they were going to face tonight.  At the last minute, the Mariners backed out because of an ankle injury to second base prospect David Adams.

The deal was Jesus Montero who is one of if not the best hitting prospect in all of baseball, Adams and Zach McAllister who is a AA pitcher.  The Yankees apparently thought the deal was done and then the Mariners went to the Rangers and said if you give us Justin Smoak Lee is yours.

The Yankees are very upset over this and I do not think you will see any deals between the Mariners and Yankees anytime soon.

The Yankees did sign veteran Chad Tracy to a minor league deal today.  He will be in AAA Scranton to serve as infield insurance in case someone gets hurt.  The Yankees were supposed to face Cliff Lee tonight but that will not happen now and David Pauley will make the start instead.  Here are some news, notes, and lineups prior to tonight’s game.

Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Swisher (DH), Teixeira (1B), Rodriguez (3B), Cano (2B), Posada (C), Granderson (CF), Curtis (RF), Gardner (LF)

Mariners Lineup: Suzuki (RF), Figgons (2B), Branyan (DH), Lopez (3B), Gutierrez (CF), Kotchman (1B), Saunders (LF), Johnson (C), Wilson (SS)

The Yankees are currently 4-0 on their seven game road trip.  They will send Phil Hughes to the mound tonight against David Pauley.  Lee was supposed to start tonight but he was traded.  The Yankees will be looking for their seventh straight win; it ties their longest winning streak of the season.  The Yankees were the first team in the majors to reach 50 wins.  It marked the 11th time in franchise history they reached 50 wins by the midway point of the season.

Andy Pettitte last night improved to 11-2 with a 2.70 ERA.  He leads the league in win percentage and is tied for the second most wins in the league with his teammate CC Sabathia.  He has the fifth lowest ERA in the American League.  It is the lowest ERA by a Yankees starter in the first half of a season since David Cone in 1997.  Cone had a 2.55 mark that season.  Over Pettitte’s last 33 starts he has gone 21-4 with a 3.07 ERA.

The Yankees now have two 11 game winners in Pettitte and Sabathia.  It is the first time they have had two 11 game winners before the All Star Break since 2003 when Pettitte and David Wells accomplished the feat.  It is just the fourth time since 1955 it has happened.  Yankees pitchers have held their opponents to five runs total over their last four games.  The Yankees have won a season high five straight road games.  They are 11-3 in their last 14 road games.  They have the second best road record in baseball behind only Tampa Bay.

Yankees starters are 45-22 with a 3.79 ERA this season accounting for 83.3% of the team’s wins.  It is five more wins than any other starting staff in baseball.  It marks the most wins by the starting staff before the All Star Break since 2003 when they went 47-28 with a 3.99 ERA.  The 3.79 ERA this season is the third lowest behind the Mariners and Rays.  Mark Teixeira has
