Seattle, WA (July 11) – The New York Yankees had their seven game winning streak snapped last night by the Seattle Mariners. Javier Vazquez continued to pitch well but Joba Chamberlain blew the lead in the eighth inning. Chamberlain has been inconsistent this year, when he gives up runs he gives them up in bunches.
Last night he had his stuff but he was not locating. Here are some news and notes from last night and today before the last game against the Mariners.
Joe Girardi as you would expect said he would send Chamberlain back out there in the eighth inning. Chamberlain said he missed his spot bad on the grand slam and that he let Vazquez down but you move on to the next day, which is all you can do. Girardi said this about Vazquez “Can’t say enough about Vazquez, His changeup was dynamite tonight, and he threw a lot of them. I thought he located his fastball good. I thought that was as good as he’s thrown for us all year.”
Nick Swisher is hitting 435 with two home runs and four doubles on this road trip. Mark Teixeira has now reached base safely in 31 straight games. The loss snapped the Yankees season high seven game winning streak. Hernandez of the Mariners has now pitched three straight complete games against the Yankees. He is the first pitcher to do that since Jaime Navarro in 1990-91.
Swisher was named to the Home Run Derby yesterday and is excited to be part of it. He said he is going to treat it like anything else in his life. Swisher is going to go have fun and hope he doesn’t embarrass himself. He said he wants to hit at least one and is not thinking of winning it. Tony Pena the Yankees bench coach will pitch to him. Swisher asked his father Steve Swisher who was an All Star in 1976 to do it but he said he is too old and didn’t know if he could pitch well enough to him. Pena throws batting practice to Swisher every day so that will be fine with him.
The Yankees rotation after the break will be Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Hughes, and Vazquez. Girardi said don’t read anything into it, it is just the way they are doing it. Sergio Mitre pitched three innings in the Gulf Coast League yesterday. Mitre allowed one run, two hits and struck out three. The Yankees will have him either join the big club right after the break or pitch one more rehab on Thursday. Girardi knows who the replacement players for the pitchers on the All Star Team will be but will not announce them until Sunday.
Bob Sheppard the voice of Yankee Stadium who had fallen ill over the last couple of years passed away this morning at the age of 99. The Yankees will honor him before the Old Timers Game on Saturday. He announced his final game on September 5, 2007 a 3-2 Yankees victory over the Kansas City Royals.
