Vazquez strong but Joba blows lead as Mariners take a Game

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Seattle, WA (July 10) – The New York Yankees lost to the Seattle Mariners last night by the score of 4-1.  It was a great pitcher’s duel as Javier Vazquez had a no-hitter for 5+ innings.

Vazquez pitched seven innings giving up no runs on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.  Joba Chamberlain came on to pitch the eighth after Vazquez threw a season high amount of pitches.  Chamberlain gave up a grand slam and just like that the Yankees winning streak ended.

The Yankees got on the board first in the third inning on a solo home run by Nick Swisher.  The score looked like it might hold up and it did until the eighth inning.  The Mariners started the inning with a base hit and then Ichiro Suzuki hit one back to Chamberlain who almost turned a 1-6-3 double play but Suzuki was too fast and beat it out.

Chamberlain than gave up a single to Chone Figgons and a walk to Russel Branyan.  Jose Lopez came up to bat with the bases loaded and one out and hit a grand slam that gave the Mariners a 4-1 lead.  The Yankees would rally a little in the ninth but stranded runners at the corners with one out as Hernandez struck out Jorge Posada and Brett Gardner to end the game.

Hernandez threw a complete game giving up 10 hits and one run.  Hernandez walked two and struck out nine.  Gardner, Mark Teixeira, and Curtis Granderson all had two hits.  Nick Swisher had the only RBI with his home run.  Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter all had hits.  Chamberlain said, “I definitely let Javy down.  It was tremendous the way he pitched.  I’ve got to go out there and protect that one-run lead for all the hard work he did.”  Vazquez said he felt great and it was probably the best outing of the year for him at least location wise.

The Yankees will try to win the series this afternoon with CC Sabathia on the mound against Ryan Rowland-Smith.  The Yankees are 5 and 1 on their current seven game road trip and would like to end the first half winning six of seven on the road.

The All Star Break begins tomorrow and the Yankees will start the second half on Friday at home against the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Yankees are two games ahead of the Rays for first place in the AL East and five games ahead of the Boston Red Sox.
