Vazquez shuts down Athletics in quick fashion

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Oakland, CA (July 5) – The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics Monday night or early Tuesday morning depending on where you live.  The Yankees won by the score of 3-1, Javier Vazquez pitched seven strong innings giving up one run on three hits.

Vazquez walked two and struck out two.  Joba Chamberlain pitched an impressive eighth inning striking out two and one day after blowing a save Mariano Rivera picked up a save with a easy 1-2-3 inning.  The game was played crisply and abruptly finishing in under three hours.

The Yankees got on the board first in the second inning on a Nick Swisher double, Curtis Granderson triple and Francisco Cervelli single.  The Yankees led 2-0 when the Athletics scored a run on triple by Cliff Pennington and a sacrifice fly by Coco Crisp.  The Yankees scored their final run of the game in the sixth inning when Mark Teixeira hit a solo home run.  The Yankees are now 20 games over 500 for the first time this season.  The Yankees lead the Tampa Bay Rays by two games and the Boston Red Sox by 2 1/2 in the AL East.

Javier Vazquez said “I feel like if I go out there and throw quality innings, then I’m going to go deep into games.  That’s always important as a starting pitcher, that you can go deep.”  Vazquez started off terribly this season but has gone 6-4 with a 3.04 ERA since May 12.

Mark Teixeira said “He’s been huge, he had a tough month, but there were a couple of other guys that had tough months in April.  That’s baseball, you are not going to be successful all season long, every time out.  The best players and best teams bounce back from adversity.”

The Yankees certainly have shown that, you do not get the feeling that they are playing the best baseball they can yet they are 20 games over 500 and have the best record in all of baseball.  The Yankees have had injuries and players getting off to poor starts but have still managed to win games.  The Yankees are on pace for 100 wins and it does not seem possible, the scary thing is they could play better the second half of the season.

The Yankees will play game two of their three game series in Oakland Tuesday night with CC Sabathia on the mound against Trevor Cahill.
