Cleveland, OH (July 26) – The New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians by the score of 3-2 last night. Javier Vazquez made the start and pitched seven+ innings giving up two runs and five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. There was a man on first in the eighth inning when manager Joe Girardi took out Vazquez and brought in reliever Dave Robertson who got the hitter to ground into a double play and Boon Logan finished off the inning with a strikeout.
Mariano Rivera recorded his 21st save with a scoreless ninth inning. Joe Girardi said before the game that Joba Chamberlain was his eighth inning guy but he was left in the bullpen during the eighth inning so of course there will be questions.
Curtis Granderson continued his hot hitting, he hit a two-run home run that gave the Yankees the victory and also hit one off the top of the walk which looked like a double but the umpire called him out at second base. The replays after showed that he was safe and Granderson said that he was safe.
Nick Swisher had a solo home run. Jorge Posada had a hit and that was all for the Yankees offense who were stifled by Jake Westbrook and his sinker. Alex Rodriguez is still stuck on 599 career home runs, he did have a single, but it was ruled a catch and it was a big play in the game at the time because the replays clearly showed that the ball was trapped and the Yankees would have had two men on and one out with Robinson Cano coming up.
The Yankees won the first game of this four game set and seven game road trip. The Yankees remain three games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays who won last night with Matt Garza pitching a no-hitter. The Yankees are a major league best 16-5 in July and have gone 7-3 since the All Star Break.
CC Sabathia will take the mound tomorrow looking to make it three games in a row for the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez has gone 16 at bats now without a home run and he will tie Ken Griffey Jr. for second longest between 599 and 600 if he does not do it in his first at-bat tomorrow. Willie Mays went 21 at bats in between which are the longest.
