Washington, D.C. (July 13) – Millions of unemployed Americans are stuck in limbo, awaiting Governor Manchin. The Governors key appointment will likely bring the necessary number of votes for cloture on one the unemployment extension bills awaiting the Senate, H.R. 4213 Jobs Creation and Closing Tax Loopholes Act blocked by Senate Republicans, or H.R. 5618 Emergency Restoration of Unemployment Extensions recently passed by the House.
The Senate Democratic Leadership, astutely aware that Republican’s will block any assistance to the nations unemployed inclusive of the long-term ‘99ers’, patiently await the dearly departed Senator Byrd’s replacement to join the rank and file to help fight for Americas workforce and end the Republican filibuster against, the unemployed.
For over a month now, an estimated 1.8 million Americans have lost their precious lifeline, unemployment benefits. Unemployment benefits that add strength to local economies as well as, put food on the table for an estimated 15 million unemployed Americans as well as, a roof over their heads, and means of transportation necessary to locate that ever so elusive, next job.
Repeatedly, this country has watched the Republican Party turn their backs to the working, middle classes, and unemployed reasoning that aiding their rich campaign donors with tax breaks that steal from the poor and give to the rich, remain protected under law until at least November’s elections.
Countless appeals from Governors across the United States to their respective Republican Senator’s are ignored. With states desperately in need of federal funding for unemployment extensions, as well as the hopes of gaining much-needed subsidies for their workforce in the terms of jobs creation, Governors are in the battle against Republican Senators as well.
In part, the rescinding of the lucrative tax breaks that sent thousands of jobs overseas by the Republican leadership over the last ten years, has been a major objection to Senate Republicans while blocking assistance to the unemployed.
To date, Governors have had little to no more influence over their own U.S. Congressional Republican delegation, in the Senate than the average unemployed American citizen.
The Republican Party is out of touch with not only reality but with Americas workforce, once the backbone of this great nation. The Republican party is acting more like the leadership of the former Soviet Union whereas, the smallest percentages of that former countries citizens realized wealth and independence while the majority of the population was kept held at bay by means of strong arm financial tactics, simply put, kept poor.
The countries unemployed will certainly need some form of a leg-up as will the nations industry as a whole. The nation’s citizens have sat with their hands tied as the wealthiest of Republican Party members, and campaign donors closed the doors on their factories, shipped their jobs overseas, and sent their families out to the streets.
Meanwhile, the Republicans and their friends, continue to line their pockets with the fruits of what is left of the middle-class and the ever-expanding lower class, via American taxpayer’s monies. All to which were, handed out via the Bush administration, all to the cost of the taxpayers in the form of TARP monies, and once again, tax cuts to the nation’s top 3 percent wage earners, none of which was paid for with offsets, just simply pushed off on the American workforce, their children, and grandchildren.
Albeit, Monday July 26 seems far in the future, for those the Senate Republicans have left unemployed out in the cold but, hope is on the horizon for millions of unemployed. If all goes well, once Governor Manchin’s appointment reaches the Senate by the end of this week, the likelihood of cloture on either, H.R. 4213 Jobs Creation and Closing Tax Loopholes Act, or H.R. 5518 Emergency Restoration of Unemployment Extensions should be an historical victory for the nation’s economy, and unemployed within the next two weeks.

How much longer can the unemployed go waiting? The reality of not getting to this, this week is unimaginable. It will take a week between a yes vote and access to funds alone. With the unexplained delay people are looking at August. That makes no sense to me.
How can any representative of the people, which includes more than just the richest 2% of Americans, spin this in their favor. Can someone please tell me how Mr. Potter from it’s a wonderful life keep winning and destroying the American dream?
There is something really wrong here.

I have already spoken with the Democratic leadership in DC… they know as well as, you and I know that the bill will not pass cloture until the last vote arrives… the GOP will not pass either bill so, it would be prudent to wait until all “ducks were in a row” before proceeding… that’s not to mention that once cloture is achieved, there is the mandatory waiting period for the final vote so, even if cloture were obtained today, nothing would happen on H.R. 4213 since it would need to go back to the House for ratification (it has been stripped down to bare-bones unemployment needs mainly) so, the obvious move is to wait until Friday or Monday to get the needed votes to get H.R. 5618 passed without a cloture move since, it is a clean bill and that of course, you and I know for a fact that Senate Republicans will start throwing pork into to via amendments to stall the bill to which, Senator Majority Leader Reid, will need to order a cloture vote on the new bill to move that along as well… so worse case scenario is IF H.R. 5618 receives cloture it will be by late next week before the new bill can go to the Oval office for signature…

Thank you for your realistic explanation of the delay and difficulties in getting the bill passed this week or next. Unfortunately, I have just lost hope because you have just told me that I’m not going to be able to pay my bills or my August rent.
I wish that somehow we could communicate to the cold hearted Republicans the disaster that they are causing with their games.

It’s been said over and over… even the states Governors have NO influence on their respective US Senators….. There’s not much else to do regarding this situation… as hard as the GOP tries, this problem will simply not go away by either ignoring it, or fighting against it….

We know there is nothing we can do about it, that’s part of why we’ve lost hope. That isn’t the point though.
The point is that this never should have come this far. This should have been taken care of over a month ago, but the nonsense games that our politicians keep playing at the expense of the well being of millions of Americans is beyond ridiculous.
I don’t want to sound rude, but Sen. Byrd has been dead a while, and as of yet we still do not have a replacement for him. Why is that?
Gov. Manchin knows full well that replacing Sen. Byrd would have allowed this vote to go through a couple weeks ago. Yet, instead of appointing a replacement for him in a reasonable time frame, he wanted the position himself and hoped he would get it. Manchin was merely looking out for himself and his political futre, and in doing so, put millions of Americans on the line.

Chris the Senator died just two weeks ago….. States don’t have people in line to succeed elected officials like the federal government does… there was a question of whether the state of West Virgina would need to hold a special election or not… it was decided a temporary appointment would do until November

He would if the Republicans would stop obstructing every effort to deal with this crisis. It’s gullible people like you who miss the fact that the Republican Party’s sole political philosophy is to idle the government and then let the party in “power” be blamed for a lack of progress. Their newfound fiscal responsibility is a joke if you consider… oh the last eight years maybe? Maybe? The fact that you and so many other gullible people have fallen for this is laughable. Tea Party? You guys actually think it’s tea you’re drinking. Try Kool-Aid. And you’re all too obtuse to work anyway so good luck without unemployment benefits.

This is a real crime what the Republicans are getting away with. They are only concerned about the deficent when it comes on the back of the working class. They have no shame,no real sense of dencency.Only the wealthy elite, self interest groups and fools support them. However, there seems to be plenty of morons that will vote for them no matter the cost!

I am an unemployed independent. I am directly effected by the current unemployment stalemate. You are not correctly stating the facts. The hold up is not wether or not it is approved, but how it is paid for! The Dems. want to add the price to the deficit. The Repubs. want to pay for it out of the unused portion of the Stimulus money. Reading your take on it is like reading Provda. Totally slanted left and disingenuous. Be American, be objective!!

Actually, various Republicans have already commented that the unemployed are lazy, drug addicts who will not look for jobs if unemployment benefits are available… how can you ignore those comments? Another Republican also said that certain “conservative” tax breaks in legislations (that have financial kickbacks from special interest groups) do not need to be paid for.
So adding to the deficit is not taboo for either parties, its dependent on their personal level of political or financial interest.
Also, the Unemployment extension the Republican tried to pass thru was a VERY short-term band aid… so short that we would again be debating another extension renewal soon after it is passed.
Democrats are no saints either, but since this is now a stripped down, stand alone bill, provides no new extensions, and currently “available” extensions have been reduced minus $100 a month.. this is reductions to bare necessities.
Adding this to the deficit would have virtually no effect on this country while providing immediate aid to those who are more recently unemployed. The positive financial and humane benefits it will provide to those unemployed who are QUALIFIED to receive it, outweigh any negative effects, which is just slight digit points on a piece of paper.

This situation with the unemployment extension is beyond belief. Regardless of the outcome it is time to start protesting against this government of sold-out, un-American liars. If nothing else then local protests against the US Senate. And where the h___ is our President in all this. He is that ineffectual? He can do nothing? Why doesn’t he get very angry and make a public statement in support of the millions of Americans being held hostage by this? Unemployment has not been this bad since the 1930s and they’ll be setting up Hoovervilles soon–and no comment from our President. As proud as we might be of our elected black President and his lovely wife and family, while they dress in $20,000 ballgowns and tuxes for million-dollar photo ops and pick at organic gourmet meals on gold-rimmed plates and contemplate their next summer vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, the average American faces homelessness. It is shameful. I SAY PROTEST AGAINST THIS GOVERNMENT.

I think that the unemployment status for all of the americans in this country is way to long in the making. We have so many people, families waiting continually for a glimmer of hope. While the wait for so many simply took too long, causing families to loose their homes, vechicles and self esteem. This is taking it’s toll not only on pocket books but also on personal relationships. It’s very sad, these people worked for as long as possible to provide for their families depending on unemployment to help them with surviving. They pay their taxes and deserve to get help! Why is it we live in a country that is always willing to help other countries but not their own!!!?

Amen!! It has hurt us in alot of ways. Yes our self esteem, relationships as well. I agree and have for many years that we are always looking out for the “other guy” when right in our own back yards we need help. Starving children are here. Not to mention those of us who want to work but can’t due to the run down economy. Sending our jobs to other countries was the biggest mistake we could have made.

i am one of the unemployed who has not received a check for 5 weeks now.it has been extremely rough for me and my three kids.i am still looking for a job but there are so many others applying for the same job.i have started to take my kids to the free lunch for the very first time.its very humbling.today i spent over an hour at once upon a child resale shop selling some toys and clothes of the kids so i could buy some more groceries.we spent our fourth of july “holiday” eating hotdogs and cereal every day.i am quite sure the fatcat senators were all on lovely vacations having a ball.i had worked for 13 years with this company before the recession.i am not part of one of the banks that caused this mess, they are still getting vacations and wonderful fat paychecks while the rest of us suffer for their greediness.i am also worried about the defecit but i am sick of getting kicked in the teeth for another persons actions.i have absoloutly no respect for any politician anymore.they have no clue how the regular people live.i am starting to lose hope.thank you to those who comment who may not be unemployed but still care.my own father thinks if you apply at enough places, even if you arent qualified you will land a job but it is no longer that way.those who say the unemployed are just lazy have their heads up their butt

The News Media keeps saying that the Republicans will take back the Congress because of the National debts. They fail to realize we vote according to what is happening to us now. Millions that are waiting for the unemployment extensions will remember that the Republicans are at fault thus will vote a Democratic Ticket. I for one is voting straight Democratic along with all my children. They see that the Republicans are willing to help the rich and not the working people of this country. It appears to me that the Republicans feel the unemployed are lazy drug addicts. They are far from the truth, I have a degree and my kids have either a trade or a degree and feel they could use the help now!

I have worked since i was 13 years old. My mom and dad had to sign a piece of paper to let me start working. I am now forty with a family. I lost my job Nov 2009. I was a project Superintendent for the last ten plus years. This is my first time collecting unemployment.
I have been looking for work and have applied for over 500 + jobs easy maybe more.I have applied for jobe with more than a 50% pay cut just to get a paycheck to come in. Not one interview yet… Very discouraging.
I am not a lazy person and do not expect something for nothing. But when my 26 weeks of unemployment ran out and i know other people far better off than me that have collected 99 weeks. It hurts..
I have recieved a loan extention for my truck from the banck for a month. I watched my bank account and everything else go to a 0 balance. and wonder when i am gonna get a check or a job wich comes first. And the big question is will me and my family still have a roof over our head a car/truck to drive to this job?
It doesnt look good. I might be able to survive one more week until I start getting evicted and have to turn my truck in to default my loan.
I watched my credit go to hell wich affects you getting a job. This is a emergency and the Gov. needs to act sooner than later….Dont know what else to do…

If all of this was not bad enough, last night it was reported that it is now against the law to feed the homeless in Miami. A fine of $350.00 if you are caught. Reasoning behind this, is somewhat kinda vague, but it sounds like you have to take a course in food prep and clean up before you can feed the hungry. OMG is all I can say. The United States representatives are becoming more like countries that suppress their people than I can believe. It is a crime to be mindful, caring, not greedy, intellectual,to be in need, to not hate others or live in fear, to live next to the oil spill, to speak out against this crazy tyranny. You now can end up in jail with fines for feeding the poor/hungry in this great nation that once led the world in how to be the best.
This Nation better wake up and smell the coffee.

I’ve given up, these are sad times for my families. Not just mine, my Dad, my Mom and her husband too. I’ve worked since I was sixteen and was always promoted because of my work ethics. I’ve been with Global Corporations and have seen a lot. But this is a something I’ve never seen. My parents who have worked, supported and accomplished things in life have lost everything!!! Their house, cars, credit and not to mention both have cancer and now will not even be able to rent. This is not politics, this is what God said would happen and it will. We will destruct ourselves, wake up and pick up a bible. Read it and see all that “Man” thinks they own…. You will be surprised to see it really isn’t yours to begin with. I’m tired of politics and everyone (including myself) having opinions but doing nothing about it. Let’s help our neighbors figure out what to do right now with themselves. FAITH AND HOPE IS ALL THAT’S LEFT….. I bet when the rest are in our shoes they will be on bended knees….

How can the President get anything done with so much opposition? Creating jobs I’m sure is his and many others, (not republicans) priorities. With all the republicans actions no to everything unless it is paid for EXCEPT two wars, billions in tax breaks for 2% of richest Americans, special interest for all those companies overseas that do not have to pay a livable salary, health care, retirement, and so on.
Who can compete with this? What jobs? How can Obama do it when we keep sending Mr. Potter to Washington and preventing Mr. Smith going to Washington.
The only way to get out of this mess is to spend money. History will support this plan. Only difference it will be spent on the working American and not the working overseas population. Money needs to be spent and all you republicans know it. You just don’t like the idea its on people who do not represent the OLD BOYS CLUB. Enough of wall street, why don’t they move to another country with the republicans and the T-party and leave us alone to do what we have to do.
Vote the jerks out. It never changes, this conquer and divide crap is getting old. Out with old and in with the new.

Anyone remember the pharmaceutical drug bill that Bush got passed? Wonder how the Republicans paid for that one? Oh that’s right, they didn’t pay for it. We’re doing that now. And didn’t we have a surplus…
But never mind all that trivia. I think the Republicans and corporations will take care of everything. They’ve done a great job so far except the last YEAR (yes people Democrats have been in power for just a year but let’s blame them anyway).
Anyway, I say vote Republican and while you’re at it, shoot your other foot.

REMEMBER THIS, things turn for the worse, and then gets better. Someone WILL have to answer to someone above. I believe in that. Its sad how government is so worried about everything else BUT the unemployed. Now we get this extension, and does anybody see whats going to happen in NOV? It will be REPEATED AGAIN. Poor Obama, I know he has alot of white hairs, but he needs to get a backbone, and put his foot down, and quit letting these REPUBLICANS punk him. Get with it BROTHA…

Show your republican congressmen this and lets get this publicised.
Republicans in action:
The Hooverville or shanty town that was erected in Washington DC in 1932 housed 15000 World War One veterans and their families. They were asking congress to give them relief in 1932 in the form of money promised to them in 1945 so they could feed themselves and their families. The House voted to do it, the Senate, of course, just like today, voted no. What did our great Republican President do (President Hoover)? He sent in troops to drive out the WWI veterans and burnt down their shanty town.
Douglas McArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton were amongst the military men who led troops into the Washington D.C. Hooverville and evicted every man, woman and child there. The buildings were torn down, the entire flat was leveled.
Troops were used to evict veterans. I can only imagine that in the minds of those troops, who had to do their duty, were the thoughts that someday this could be their fate.

I find it crazy that when any other country (like Haiti) needs help, they get it within days as we write a check to them, but our own country needs help and they can’t get it. This is B.S. Something needs to happen and quick. If the government can’t help, then we can’t help the government. Vote them all out in November. Nothing is getting done anyway except bailing large companies out. I am tired of both sides fighting like they are in kindergarden. What can be done???

The unemployment benefits extensin is just a small part of HR 4213.
Before condemning the republicans as being heartless bastards, consider why all of the other legislature was included in a bill that would extend unemployment benefits. Could a possible reason be that this is exactly what the Democratic Leaderhip wanted to happen so that they could make the Republicans look heartless?
Just food for thought.
