UK (Jul 2) – Ignoring the obvious feeling of media induced fear that is instilled in every man, woman and child regarding the threat of terrorism, which is a fairly stupid thing to live in fear of by the way…
When you really think about it, it is really silly and a little arrogant if you ask me. I would probably worry more about it if I worked at a big bank in the city or something like that… Then I would have more to worry about, like hating my own existence.
There is a point you reach, if you are lucky enough, when you just decide ‘to hell with it’ these papers are lying to me. Too many people allow tabloid journalists to shape their outlook. That is a worry; to me it is more of a worry than some miscellaneous Middle Eastern person who hates ‘me’. I’m not saying that all tabloid journalists are shills who are told what to say. However, let’s face it, most of them are. People like Rupert Murdoch are not interested in differing points of view, just money.
I know people who are so afraid of terrorists that they will not get on a plane. Not getting on a plane kind of limits what kind of life you are going to have, to deprive yourself of this ability to travel based on the opinions of a tabloid is really dumb. I am sorry if that includes you, reader, but it is. I am really scared of AIDS, but it isn’t going to stop me having sex.
Today in the UK John Yates, the Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, who were once led by Ian Blair, the man completely responsible for the cold-blooded and racially motivated killing of Jean Charles De Menenez, has announced that budget cuts by the Government will open the doors to terrorist attacks.
Although there will be massive holes left in counter-terrorism by cutting £87 million from it’s budget, I think people like Yates should concentrate on doing his job, which I’m sure doesn’t involve running his mouth to the press about possible terror attacks. He should be busy thinking about real crimes being committed, and less about theoretical crimes. No matter how terrible and tragic they could be, theoretically.
This story is over-shadowed today though, by a thrilling return to the cold war. The Cold War part 2 has kicked off, and today all the papers are covering it. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m excited. Spies? Femme Fatales? KGB? Not forgetting the 19-year-old femme fatale spy whose father is a KGB guy, and the man who loved her.
The Cold War is no longer a serious threat in regard to public perception, largely due to movies like James Bond, in particular ‘Goldeneye’ in which the KGB was represented by Robbie Coltrane, the big lovable Scottish guy. The fear of nuclear war is a distant memory now that we have been conditioned to fear a more localised threat in suicide bombings or dirty bombs being let off in a place near you soon.
The British husband of one of the accused in the spy story has ‘broken his silence’. Apparently, Alex Chapman (30) gave a list of reasons for believing that 19 year old Anna is involved in the spy ring including claims that his new wife became “arrogant and secretive” over the course of their marriage and that her Russian father who could possibly have been KGB might have conditioned Anna… This seems to be based on the fathers nationality and Chapmans own prejudice.
Cynicism aside, there could be something in Chapman’s claims… Who knows, but it sounds a lot like she was cheating on him. That would be embarrassing, telling all to the tabloids that, based on behaviour, his wife is a Russian spy involved in a massive espionage ring, when in fact she is just sneaking off at night to her bit on the side.
You do not have to be Nostradamus to have guessed the relationship with the Russians wouldn’t stay civil forever, you wouldn’t even have to be Nastradamus, the 1999 album by Nas, neither side ever gave up spying on each other. Now that Russia is back in the space race, while Obama and his team have pulled out in favour of the indefinite occupation of Afghanistan, it was inevitable that this type of thing would return.
It is just strange that these supposed spies tried to infiltrate PTA groups and cocktail parties, rather than politics or high society.
The FBI have announced that one of their suspects has admitted to them that he is part of a deep cover espionage ring, has a fake identity and is loyal to the KGB, if forced to he would choose the Russians over his family.
Duck and cover folks.
