Santana pitches and hits way to victory

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Flushing, NY (July 6)-The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 3-0 this evening.  Johan Santana who hasn’t been getting any run support all year figured he would help himself and hit a home run in the game.  Santana also did not leave anything to chance and pitched a complete game giving up no runs on three hits.  Santana hit his first career home run.

Jose Reyes made his return to the lineup and had two hits; David Wright also had a hit.  Jason Bay had a big two-run single.  Bay has been driving in runs even though he still isn’t hitting home runs.  Jeff Francoeur and Ruben Tejada also each had a hit.  Santana became the first Mets pitcher to hit a home run since John Maine did it in 2007.  Santana hit his home run in the third inning off the right-field foul pole to give the Mets the 1-0 lead.  Bay hit his two-run single in the sixth but the home run was more than enough for Santana.  Santana gave up a leadoff triple in the first but he retired the next 10 batters in a row.

The Mets will try and win the series tomorrow night with Jon Niese pitching against Bronson Arroyo.  The Mets are in second place in the NL East by two games.  The Mets and Braves will hook up in a three game series to close out the first half at Citi Field.  The three games will be over the weekend.  The Mets will be going for 11 games over 500 also tomorrow.  The Mets are currently leading the wild card chase by one game over the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers.
