President Obama: GOP Choosing to “Filibuster Our Recovery and Obstruct Our Progress”

Washington, D.C (July 18) – In President Obama’s weekly address, the President blamed the Republican Minority Leadership for ruining the nations chances for recovery. The minority leadership is opposing initiatives, which would create jobs, cut taxes, and unemployment extensions intentionally blocking the road to the nation’s recovery.

The President pointed out that refusing aid to small businesses and turning their backs on unemployed Americans’ is simply the wrong thing to do, “[sic] When crises strike Main Street, the President believes it’s important to put aside politics and act in the best interests of American families and small businesses.”

During yesterday’s weekly address, Obama remarked, “For months, that’s what we’ve been trying to do.  But too often, the Republican leadership in the United States Senate chooses to filibuster our recovery and obstruct our progress.  And that has very real consequences.”

Referring to obstructing the aid for small businesses to grow that create two out of every three jobs in the nation. Small businesses are having problems getting the loans and capital they need to remain open, and hire new workers. President Obama stated, “So we proposed steps to get them that help:  Eliminating capital gains taxes on investments.  Establishing a fund for small lenders to help small businesses.  Enhancing successful SBA programs that help them access the capital they need,” furthering “But again and again, a partisan minority in the Senate said “no,” and used procedural tactics to block a simple, up-or-down vote.”

Once again, the President assured the nations unemployed workforce that is not, nor has it ever been, the Democratic Leadership intentions to leave millions of unemployed Americans without assistance, “Some Republican leaders actually treat this unemployment insurance as if it’s a form of welfare. They say it discourages folks from looking for work.”

Republicans have had a sudden change in heart regarding establishing what is, and what is not emergency assistance, budget spending above and beyond. During the Bush administration, the Iraq war, a war that has cost tax payers, their children, and grandchildren trillions of dollars in emergency spending bills, along with interest to be paid on those bills. The tax-cuts to the wealthiest of Americans, the privatization of Medicare, along with Tax Breaks to employers that shipped their jobs overseas, leaving the American workforce out on the streets, all unpaid for emergency spending.

Now as President Obama stated, “Republican leaders want to change that.  They say we shouldn’t provide unemployment insurance because it costs money.  So after years of championing policies that turned a record surplus into a massive deficit, including a tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, they’ve finally decided to make their stand on the backs of the unemployed.  They’ve got no problem spending money on tax breaks for folks at the top who don’t need them and didn’t even ask for them; but they object to helping folks laid off in this recession who really do need help.  And every day this goes on, another 50,000 Americans lose that badly needed lifeline.”

Unemployment insurance is more than just a lifeline to those that are suffering at the hands of both failed Republican economic policies, and politics. It provides a means to help jump start the economy, keep cash flowing into communities, and most importantly provides the much needed food, clothing, and shelter for America’s unemployed workforce and their families, once the backbone of the U.S. economy.

Inclosing his weekly address the President remarked, “Because when storms strike Main Street, we don’t play politics with emergency aid.  We don’t desert our fellow Americans when they fall on hard times.  We come together.  We do what we can to help.  We rebuild stronger, and we move forward.  That’s what we’re doing today.  And I’m absolutely convinced that’s how we’re going to come through this storm to better days ahead.”

I pray that these republicans would set aside their differences with the current admin (obviously jealous) and think about MAIN STREET INSTEAD OF WALL STREET. Do the right thing and pass the bill to extend unemployment extension. It looks to be that most Americans will have an easy task to vote in November and the repubs will be beaten at their own game.
