Flushing, NY (July 10) – The New York Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves today by the score of 4-0, losing shortstop Jose Reyes after re-aggravating his oblique. Reyes will miss the All Star Game and will be on the DL for an undetermined time.
Mike Pelfrey took the loss pitching four innings giving up 12 hits and 4 runs with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Elmer Dessens pitched a scoreless inning giving up a hit and Hisanori Takahashi pitched three innings giving up one hit, one walk, and two strikeouts. Fernando Nieve pitched an inning giving up a hit, walk, and two strikeouts.
Angel Pagan was all the offense for the Mets as he had three of their four hits. The only other hit was off the bat of Rod Barajas. Tim Hudson baffled the Mets throwing seven shutout innings allowing the four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Mets only drew two walks and the only extra base hit was a double by Pagan.
The Braves got all four of their runs in the fifth inning. Chipper Jones singled, Brian McCann singled, and Troy Glaus singled giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. Eric Hinske singled to give them a 2-0 lead and Omar Infante singled to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. The inning was capped off with a run on a double play.
The feeling has been that Pelfrey was snubbed for the All Star Game but he needs the break. Pelfrey said, “It could’ve come a couple more starts ago, but I think anytime you get some time off its good.”
Pelfrey has had three straight starts where he was not able to get through five innings. Manager Jerry Manuel thinks Pelfrey needs to throw inside more but catcher Barajas said he was calling inside pitches and Pelfrey just is not locating them. The Mets offense has been struggling scoring six runs in its past four games and just two in this series so far.
The Braves had a nice five game lead now in the NL East and the Mets will try to salvage a game tomorrow afternoon with Johan Santana taking on Derek Lowe. The Mets are currently one out of four on their six game home stand. The Mets do not want to go 1-5 into the All Star Break with a west coast trip looming after the break.
