Mets able to split series in Washington

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Washington, D.C. (July 4) – The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals by the score of 9-5.  Hisanori Takahashi made the start and pitched five innings giving up five hits and three runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Elmer Dessens pitched a scoreless inning giving up a hit; Pedro Feliciano pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and one run with two strikeouts.  Ryota Igarashi pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two hits and one run with one strikeout.  Bobby Parnell gave up two hits without recording an out and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless inning to record his 20th save.

Angel Pagan who had three hits and two RBI led the Mets offense.  Alex Cora had a hit, David Wright had two hits, and Ike Davis had one hit and two RBI with a walk.  Jason Bay had two hits and four RBI.  Jeff Francoeur had a hit and an RBI; Rod Barajas had two hits and a walk.  Fernando Tatis and Pedro Feliciano each had a hit.

The Mets scored in the first four innings to take a 8-0 lead.  The Nationals scored three runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-3 but the Mets would add another run in the seventh to take a 9-3 lead.  The Nationals scored one in the seventh and one in the eighth and the game ended 8-5.

The Mets finished their road trip with a 3-4 record and a split of the four game series in Washington.  The Mets will take the win but sort out some bad things that they would like to correct like the bullpen being a bit of a mess.  The good is that Rodriguez came on for the save and got it easily even though he should of never been in the game.  Rodriguez after having a bad game yesterday got right back out there.  He worked on a mechanical flaw with pitching coach Dan Warthen before the game and it appeared to work.

The Mets will now come home and play the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow night.  Mike Pelfrey will be on the mound.  Reyes and Wright were named to the All Star team before the game.
