San Francisco, CA (July 18) – The New York Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 4-3 this evening.  It was their only win in the four game series after dropping three straight to open the second half.

Johan Santana was on the mound and continued to pitch like an ace.  Santana pitched eight innings giving up one run on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.  Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth and blew the save giving up two runs but he did pick up the win as the Mets scored a run in the tenth and Rodriguez saved that lead in the tenth.

Angel Pagan had a hit and an RBI, Turner had a hit and David Wright had a hit, RBI and walk.  Jason Bay and Ike Davis each had three hits, Davis had two RBI, and Santana had a hit.

The Giants scored a run in the first inning.  Freddy Sanchez and Aubrey Huff had back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners.  Buster Posey hit a sacrifice fly.

The Mets would score a run in the third inning to tie the game and then take the lead in the fourth inning.  Pagan hit a RBI double in the third and Wright homered in the fourth to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.   The Giants then tied the game in the ninth on a two run single by Travis Ishikawa.  The Mets scored a run in the tenth on a Bay single and Davis double with two outs.

The Mets desperately needed this game and got a huge performance out of their ace.  The Mets have dropped three straight to start this long 11 game road trip.  The Mets will now move on to Arizona for three games before heading to Los Angeles for four games.

The home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi had an impact on this game.  There was a close play at the plate that should have ended the game but, the Mets got the benefit of the call and the runner was ruled out when he was safe.

Earlier in the ninth inning, after Rodriguez stared in following a pitch he thought should have been a strike Cuzzi began yelling out to the mound at Rodriguez.  He said after the game he was not yelling at him simply telling him where the pitch was.

Henry Blanco the catcher said he hopes someone sees that and punishes him, the Mets were very irritated about the umpire.  Bay said the Mets felt they had no business losing that game and then no business winning that game.

The Mets do not get a day off and have to fly off to Arizona right away to play a game tomorrow night.  If the Mets lost that game it would of been a lot different clubhouse but they forgave all of the controversy earlier on because they were able to win the game.

Mike Pelfrey will take on Ian Kennedy tomorrow night at 9:40PM.  The Braves continue to lead the Mets by five games in the NL East and the Mets remain 1 1/2 games back for the wild card.
