Washington, DC (July 20) – Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) closed today’s Senate session lambasting the Republican Party for once again, stalling the release of unemployment extensions by an additional 30 hours.
With the House set to vote on the measure and pass it along to the Oval Office for the President’s signature, the only thing standing between emergency unemployment assistance and 2.5 million unemployed American’s are 38 Republican Senators.
The Senate voted to invoke cloture on H.R. 4213 Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act, closing the bill to debate. By procedure, the Senate must wait 30 hours for a final vote in the meantime; Senate Republicans can waste this precious time by simply standing idly by as millions of unemployed American families go hungry, and worry about tomorrows needs.
In an inquiry regarding H.R. 4213, WorldNewsVine received the following information, “Cloture on extending Unemployment Insurance benefits (HR 4213) was invoked 60-40. There will now be up to 30 hours for debate on the motion to concur with respect to HR 4213. There is a good possibility that we are able to reach an agreement to yield back some of the debate time and that we could vote today on a Republican alternative to UI and on the motion to concur with respect to HR 4312 (this vote is essentially passage of the Unemployment Insurance extension). If no agreement is reached, the 30 hours would expire around 9pm tomorrow.”
As of the closing of the Senate session this evening, Majority Leader Reid unhappily reported the news regarding the Republican Party’s refusal to move the bill swiftly back to the House for a vote, and final passage.
Majority Leader Reid slammed the Republicans in an emotional speech, “I want everyone watching the proceedings tonight to again understand what the Republicans are doing, furthering to show the lack of understanding and feeling and compassion of the Republicans, they’re making us waste 30 hours.”
“These people, (the unemployed) are desperate for money,”
“If it gives these people over here (Minority Party) that, 2.5 million people deserve this, then let them do it,” adding “Every hour that is delayed, is more misery for 2.5 million people.”
Senator Reid pointed out how ridiculous this was, “No amendments can be offered, nothing can be done under that 30 hours except speeches.”
Once again, the Republican Party flies their anti-American workforce flag, and rejects swift action to reconcile, and provide assistance to millions of unemployed Americans that are suffering from the failed Republican Party economic, and diplomatic policies that drove this nation’s economy into the ground.
Earlier in the day, Minority Leader McConnell attempted to shift all blame on America’s workforce to the Obama administration stating, it was the current administrations fault for not creating the much needed jobs for millions of unemployed.
The Minority failed to mention that, the Republican Party also refused to reverse the Tax Cuts that sent nearly 3 million jobs overseas between 2004 and 2008 during the Bush administration or, their refusal to reverse the tax cuts that gave the ultra-rich a free pass from the IRS. McConnell also failed to point out that, the tax cuts that are expiring that the Republican Party so tout as their cornerstone, gave the average American making $54,000 annually, a reduction in federal taxes by a mere $374 annually, a dollar a day.
So tomorrow by 9:00 pm EST at the latest, the Senate will vote once again on H.R. 4213 needing only a majority vote to pass, 51 yea votes to send the bill back to the House for a final vote.
