Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the House passed the latest version of an unemployment extension bill, H.R. 5618 Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act however, the Senate was attending memorial services for Senator Robert C. Byrd, and did not have a chance to act on the measure..
The bill would extend the unemployment extensions until the end of November without the additional $25 per week (FAC) from the Stimulus fund. It would pay retroactive benefits for claimants that had their benefits expire June 2 due the Republican Party filibuster against their own bill H.R. 4213.
The bill passed the House last evening with a vote of 270 to 152 with 10 Representative abstaining. Joining the Democratic Leadership in attempting to provide for America’s jobless were 21 Republican Congressional members.
Representative McDermott (D-WA) a long time supporter of America’s middle class and unemployed along with Chairman Levin (D-MI) of the Ways and Means Committee sponsored the bill currently titled, Federal Employment Programs.
Currently the funding of the Bill is labeled an emergency under the PAYGO rules and will in all likelihood face the same opposition in the Senate as the current stalled bill. Nonetheless, unemployed American’s will be facing another national holiday, our “Independence Day” without help from the nations Party of NO, the Republican Party that had numerous chances over the past 6 months to provide for America’s unemployed and chose once again not to.
The Republicans have chosen to remain loyal to their rich campaign donors while leaving nearly 2 million American families without, by blocking passage of any additional emergency aid to the nations unemployed.
The GOP appears to be gearing up with a hidden agenda to allow their rich friends, and recipients of TARP monies for a round two of splurge of wealth by benefiting from the resale of the millions of homes that face foreclosure now along with, the many foreclosures the Republican Party is creating in the near future.
Since, the Republicans realize that stalling and forcing families out to the streets, homes will in fact foreclose. This will allow their rich campaign donors to swoop down and scoop up properties that have lost value, and essentially paid for via interest payments on existing mortgages, only to dump them back out on the market for “round two” of the Wall Street “Dash for the Cash” .
Once again, it becomes intuitively obvious that the Greedy Old Party has found a way to make cash during this, the worst recession in the nation’s history. In the 80’s it was narcotics, laundering cash wherever they could now, it has become a streamlined process. A reduced risk of losing capital in the market by simply making a trillion dollars available to their rich friends, ignore the middle class and siphon as much cash as possible in interest payments from the “second-class citizens” dump them on the streets by cutting off their cash flow, and sell the product (real estate) again. What a brilliant swindle, and apparently being kept legal by the GOP at the same time.
Meanwhile, the jobs numbers are out and surprise, the number of people collecting long-term unemployment has fallen. Another great way of making the GOP looking great for this Novembers mid-term elections although, the job ratio is still out there in many places as 5-to-1 that is, 5 unemployed looking for the same job. Overall, the recession does appear to be stabilizing with the number of jobs lost almost halved since the Bush administration took their permanent vacation versus the temporary vacation they were on for ten years, and left Washington, D.C.
All this, and the unemployed will be left waiting an additional 10 days not knowing how to feed their families, keep a roof over their head, and pay those mounting bills. The question is; will H.R. 5618 simply become another stalled bill in the Senate thanks to the Republican Party, or will this bill provide the relief millions of American families so desperately need.

I cannot believe that they left for their vacations AGAIN, and now there are people that cant even buy food for the holiday. The bills arent getting paid, which is making things even worse for ppl.

Do these rich people not worry about their future as well? The people will only put up with so much. Why do they want millions of children and families to keep suffering. Stress is not good for lower class society it shows in statistics how they become and act towards their community. they create and develops a younger society of hate. What will that do for our future and theirs?

Its funny how most Republicans state they are pro-life when they are assisting in the slaughter of American families across the nation. Is anyone really surprised by this?? Its History repeating itself. What surprises me more is how stupid the American voters really are. Considering they did vote in a Republican president not long ago.

Bravo! I’ve been saying this for years!!! They only care about the unborn because it’s a hot-ticket item that garners votes from the pro-lifers… Once the poor kid becomes older he/she’s forgotten about… Just like healthcare – be sure the child is born, but let it twist-in-the-wind when it gets older! These clowns have absolutely NO compassion!!!

“What surprises me more is how stupid the American voters really are. ”
Right Alisha…and thats what Ive been saying all along. We all know the Republicans are crooks bent on selfishness and greed, that they are the enemy of this state and its people, we can go on and on about it and end up with the same conclusion..Republicans are what they ARE. Nazis are Nazis, criminals are criminals, Republicans are Republicans. But thats not the real issue.
The real issue is..THOSE THAT IMPOWER THEM to do what they do, those that put them in the position to wreak havoc on our economy and destroy our nation and everything that it stands for. There are other political parties bent on destruction, like the American Nazi Party for one. They exist, but we dont hear about them, they dont have any political power or position, because noone empowers them by putting them in the position (ie voting them into office), so they dont do any damage to our political system or the economy.
Republicans are a different story, there are enough idiot voters that empower them with thier own stupidity and backwards thinking. Its those that empower them that are the real criminals here, they are the ones causing the problems we are and have been having with our political system. Republicans do what Republicans do…they destroy the economy, eliminate the middle class, support only the richest 1% while slamming the door on the other 99%, export badly needed jobs while at the same time, call those who lose their jobs because of their corrupt economic policies “lazy and dont want to work”, as they refer to the unemployed.
Thats who the Republicans are. Those who vote them into office could care less about the economy or the destruction bought about by thier policies, while their only concern is to support their backwards way of thinking whatever the cost is, regardless of the chaos and destruction that it brings about.
And they are aware of the destruction of Republican policies. They just simply dont care. Their only concern, is, their own backwards mentality and they will stand behind that to the bitter end.
Know your enemy, they are all around you, they are at the voting polls during elections.
One of my friends one time says to me, “well, what do we do about it?”.
My reply is, the first and foremost thing…dont go along with anything that the Republicans are about, dont go along with anything they say, be in total denial, dont give them your cooperation, dont give them an inch.
I didnt celebrate the 4th of July this year, because there is nothing at all to celebrate. I am NOT proud to be an American because of what the Bush administration has done. The “war” (as they call it) in the middle east is complete B.S. It is a phoney terrorist war. There are no “terrorists”, other than the ones in Washington bent on wreaking havoc on our economy (I call it economic terrorism, and by all counts, it qualifies as terrorism). Billions and billions of dollars are being added to the deficit on a blank check policy to fund the illicit, and totally useless action in the middle east.
I do not, and will not, support “our troops”, nor could I care less about them. And to say the phrase “OUR TROOPS”….OUR????? NOT MINE! They are “YOUR TROOPS”, and they are a bunch of duffelbags who would get their a$$e$ kicked in anything resembling a real war (ie Vietnam, for instance).
As far as Im concerned, Bush had everything to do with the 911 incident, and there is little doubt that he was behind the entire thing, as evidenced by his prior relations with the Taliban.
Whats really funny is how they always want to label me “a liberal”. Well, I am actually pretty conservative, have prior service in the US Army, 1982-88, honorable discharge 1988, prior to that I grew up in Texas military schools from 5th grade all the way until I graduated HS, consider my political stance “Confederate”, and Im into old school politics for the most part. Now, how “liberal” is that?
Brainwashing and propaganda…thats how the Republicans slide by on the “idiot voting ballot” every time. As long as we have stupid, brainwashed voters in this country that are taken in by the ridiculous propaganda schemes I keep seeing, we will have the Republican problem to deal with.
Hitler stated that getting rid of all the Jews would end all their problems. Well, I dont agree with that at all, however, if he replaced “Jews” with “Republicans”, he would have a valid statement which would apply to this date and time. If we got rid of all the Republicans, our economic problems would literally dissappear, there would be no more recesssions, jobs would be plentiful, and we would be living in an upscale economy. Its really that simple.

Every man or woman that votes against this bill should be tried for treason. What could be more treasonous than to sell out your fellow country men for a few measley dollars? The Republicans are more of a threat to this country than communism, terrorism, and socialism combined.

I am sick to my stomach, I have nothing to eat. No gas money to look for a job.
I am a 55 year old woman who has worked all her life. Have had ups and downs through this terrible economy, but this is the worst. I now will become homeless, because of the GOP and age discrimination by employers and credit checks, which should be illegal. Bad things happen to good people and their credit has nothing to do with how a person performs there job. I hope it rains where ever the senators are vacationing I hope their hot dogs and hamburgers burn. I would like to tell their children and grandchildren what they have already done to the unemployed parents of the children and grandchildren now. I know people who have lost their homes already. I already have seen homeless people in the state of GA.

I am feeling your pain I am 53 and have been out of work for 1 and 1/2 years, I have had only about 5 interviews during that time, I know it is age discrimination and the credit checks. our children that are old enough to work have not been able to find work. so if you are under 25 or over 50 you are out of luck. I will never vote for a Republican as long as I live, they take from the middle to lower class and give to the rich. They keep saying that its getting better that is BS

Judy, your post really touched my heart. I went through my second devastating downsizing from AT&T in 2002, after 18 years with the company. I had just turned 50. At the time of the downsizing, I had not only a good income with solid benefits, but, excellent credit. I’ve been unemployed again since November of 2009. I’m barely making ends meet, have no health insurance and my credit rating has plummeted. No matter what my current credit score is, I’m a good worker and shouldn’t be judged by what my credit score is. The middle worker has been all but destroyed in this country. They bailed out the big banks and they took that money and paid huge bonuses to their top execs. Those on welfare never have to worry about their money, but, what about the middle class? It’s disgusting. If I didn’t love this country so much, I’d leave. Will keep you in my prayers.

Judy I am so sorry that you and the many of us continue to suffer. These political decisions can never be said to benefit the families and breadwinners of this country.I can’t help but wonder how Congress will justify not just the emotional stress, but the increase in stress related illnesses and deaths? Have they no compassion that they would allow such a domino effect to occur???? If history will tell the truth, they must and will carry the burden of their decisions for all time and for all history. Yes, the real talk should be about serving their fellow citizens….I’m sure none or very few of them look at even one factor. When it comes time to potentially hire a person, their credit has to stand up to scrutiny. Where do people go when their lives are destroyed, only to find out that their credit hit the skids as a result of political posturing? This is just one issue that we’ll have to deal with. I could go on about all of the repercussions that will get visited on our citizens. Well, you have to have an actual physical address to get hired. The car won’t do and neither will a street corner pass for residence. Rather than bemoaning my fate and that of my family, we need to find a way to be organized as a group, and if we have to protest on the nations steps, then so be it. No…we will not eat cake…but we will remember.E-mail your elected officials, and bring this slaughter to the world-wide media.Organize and protest…I will with my very last breath. For myself, my family and every other individual and family made destitute.

How can the Senate take a 10 day VACATION! Millions of people who were already living from check to check are now without any income. Do they not realize that these individuals are voters? Regardless to prior party affiliation no one who is left hungry today will vote Republican tomorrow. Could they not sacrifice a vacation day or two in order to have an emergency session and pass a bill that would put millions of taxpayers’ minds at ease?

Remember Jim Bunning who tried the cadillac filibuster earlier this year, accompanying his filibuster with a complaint that he was missing his precious basketball game. The Editor is entirely correct. The GOP’s petulance is wearing thin, however, and I strongly suspect that the GOP will find their numbers shrinking even more if this keeps up. This petulant bickering about semantics that are allowing the wealthy to grow more wealthy is going to gratet on the nerves of even the most patient of people, and will eventually (one prays) come back and bite them come reelection time.

Jeff, it is because the working class has no representation outside of unions. For instance the unemployed workers have no representation, they are individuals, and Congressmen could care less about individuals because they are not a threat to being voted out of office.
On the other hand, lets say that unemployed workers formed a nationwide union, so now they are banded together as a group and can act as a group to swing voting ballots against Congressmen who dont act in their behalf. If this was the case, you would see them doing what they are doing now…going on vacation and ignoring UI benefits, they would be right on top of it from the getgo because now they are a threat to their being reelected.
This is the problem we are seeing now. I am not saying that there should be a union of unemployed working class..what happens when one suddenly finds a job, is he still in the union?
No, Im saying that there should be an American Workers Union, something like and American Workers Party but not necessarily a political party. A union, that can act as a whole, to unseat any Congressmen who do things like export jobs, deny unemployment benefits, ect.
WE DONT HAVE THAT! And because of it , the working class in America is being kicked around like a band of insignificant nobodies. Unemployed working class are put on the level of “bums”, no good worthless scumbags who dont have a voice in our political infrastructure, who are taking “handouts” because they are lazy, treated like skid row winos.
To understand the problem, is to understand politics. When you understand politics, then you will see where the problem is and why the working class in this country are treated the way they are being treated.

After watching C-Span yesterday and listening to republicanscome up with excuse after excuse to not give extensions to the unfortunate unemployed.I’ve come to the conclusion that I will never vote for a republican ever ever again no matter how good he/she is. Their true colors really showed through this past 8 weeks on where their loyalties lie. I only have to take care of myself but my heart goes out to those with families. I hope for the sake of this nation that those who are in dire need are never asked to do service for this country . As it stands now I wouldn’t blame them one bit for turnning their backs on those republicans in the house and senate. They have shown a blatant disregard for human dignaty of their fellow americans. They seem to find money to fund 2 wars and bail out banks and give to foriegn aid like a drunken sailor on shore leave but they can’t help out of work soon to be starving and homeless americans. We desparetly need a third party in this country and time limits set to how long one can serve in washington theres way to much coruption and under handed dealings going on and we the people need to break up this good ole boys/girls club before it ruins us all. Vote some thing else just not republican. Have a great 4th inspite of it all .

these stories people are posting aren’t fictional tales to make you feel sorry for them. they are real. the time they go without a check their credit(whatevers left of it) will be destroyed. it’s going to make the journey alot further to go back to normal when America becomes the country it used to be.

I hope you all realize that this bill, even if it passes, only extends benefits for those who have been unemployed 27-98 weeks. Those who have been unemployed 99 weeks or more will see no help at all, yet again. We need help too!!! Please!! We need a NEW BILL or an amendment that takes us into account and gives us a Tier 5 or extended Tier 4. What ought to happen is unemployment extensions indefinitely until the unemployment rate is under 6%.
Also, unemployment was cut off with no warning at the beginning of June. Anyone getting EB (unemployed between 27 and 98 weeks) has now had no income at all for four weeks. With NO WARNING – even now, our states’ unemployment websites have end dates in the future and money still in the account – but we are not allowed to claim it or have it. Our lives are starting to completely unravel, and no one seems to care. Delay after delay, week after week, and the Senate LEFT ON VACATION and left us dangling.
Many are now losing even the downsized life we had managed to hang onto with unemployment!! We are losing our homes, our cars…no money for utilities, medical care, groceries, etc. Landlords and banks don’t care. Grocery stores don’t care. Insurance and utility companies don’t care. Some of us are already living with family members and our unemployment checks, small as they were, allowed us to contribute toward food or at least feel like we’d earned our keep somewhat. Now what? Are we just supposed to live with them and give them nothing? What kind of impact is this having on THEIR spending in the economy? And what of those of us who have no family? or who will now be asked to leave if we can’t contribute? Some of us are already living in our cars. Do we have to have tent cities everywhere before people believe there is no work to be had?
We are NOT LAZY, and this is no vacation. This includes middle class workers with degrees who cannot find work. We have children and families, and we’re supposed to be celebrating a patriotic holiday, when we can hardly sleep for worry and are making ourselves sick with fear over what we’re going to do. Many of us are “overqualified” or too old. There are people in their 50s and 60s who are now trying to start over, and it is impossible – no one will hire them. There are families where BOTH parents have lost their jobs.
Are you aware that many businesses will not hire anyone who is currently unemployed? Read up on it. It’s disgusting.
Are you aware that these banks were rescued with the stimulus money with the intention of making it possible for them to loan money again and get the economy moving by helping small businesses etc? Well it isn’t happening because the banks are sitting on the stimulus money and STILL WON’T LOAN IT. Check it out if you don’t believe me.
Are you aware that our government has sent billions of dollars in humanitarian aid to Haiti, Greece etc — and we are suffering at home? Deregulation and outsourcing have destroyed this country’s economy and taken away good jobs. That is our government’s fault, and they need to step up and help now that we are in an emergency situation because of them.
Are you aware that without unemployment, with no prospect of work, the American economy is going to tank even further? People on unemployment – millions of us all of a sudden – are being pulled completely out of the economy, along with our money. That is going to hurt even more businesses, causing more layoffs, etc… it will NEVER STOP – unemployment benefits have been holding this economy together and now it’s going to implode while we all are forced to apply for public aid. And with most of our states broke, who’s going to pay for that?

I am not certain of what you are referring to… if you have or on an active Tier you can still collect those funds until your Tier expires… moving on to the next Tier is what is hung-up… as far as the 99 week limitation.. It is still a wait and see game…

Actually KJ is right because I live in Maryland, and I have a balance of 3,848.00 and was told that my benefits have been blocked because as of week ending june 5th I was at 34 weeks, and was therefore unable to collect. However as of week ending june 12th i I had been at 35 weeks or more I would have been able to collect the MD maximum of 47 weeks, go figure I would miss the deadline by 1 week.

While you fly home on the taxpayer dime, to enjoy a nice long week + off to your fancy homes or vacation retreats, the people who voted you in to office are foreclosing on their homes. While you fire up the grill, or have your servants do it for you, the millions of people who elected you are trying to figure out how to feed their children. The time is now to organize and do away with the republicans that appose the people over big business. Greed has veered its ugly head and its name is the GOP. The beliefs and morals that used to the pride of the republican party are no longer due to selfishness and we as the people of the United State of America have a moral obligation to abolish this ugly greedy monster and appoint the right people. Then we must set an example and PUNISH these people publicly to ensure that everbody knows what will happen if they try it again. We have a lot of hard work America but together we can and will prevail. Each and everyone of us must reach out to eachother and form a better union, just like we did before. We did it once we can do it again, all we have to do is want it. I know I want it. Do you?

I received 20 weeks of unemployment and that ended May 29. I’ve been “on hold” waiting for the fed extension but now in KS, they are going ahead and processing our ‘on hold” apps for STATE benefits. It’s been 5 weeks since I have had any kind of check and the last one was 150.00. My rent was due 2 days ago, phone and utilities…can’t pay…Groceries??? What is that? I’ve been eating once a day for alomst 2 months now but that is going to stop in a few days. I RENT for 420.00 a month and that’s not much but it is when you don’t have it! I drive a salvage vehicle I bought for one thousand dollars and it heats up after I drive it 4 miles. I’m at the end of my rope here. I did read today on the KS unemployment website that they will be processing out State Benefits when they return from their 4th of July holiday. I will just keep checking it the same 156 times daily that I always have. At least it is a ray of hope….SOMEtime in the future, I should get my back benefits from 5 weeks and counting. I’ve sent letters to the President, KS Senators and Reps..BEGGING for help.

Hang in there Kansas… something has to break soon… I am hoping for a Constitutional Vote on the whole matter and have been advocating for FEMA to begin setting up housing, food, and medical care facilities for the millions in the same boat as you… this is a scary situation indeed… the Republicans ran this country into the ground and they look to be setting their campaign donors from Wall Street up for a round two on the TARP fund… That’s the only viable reason the GOP won’t release TARP monies that are available for the unemployed… with the copious amounts of foreclosures looming on the horizon along with credit card defaults you can bet the GOP’s friends will be back looking for bonus monies from the middle-class taxpayers again (all unpaid for assistance for the wealthy)…. Once the Wall Street gang begins scooping up foreclosed properties to which, many homeowners have already paid most if not all off via interest payments, they can dump that back out on the market for half price (or what it is really worth) and double dip once again….

Yes, Olaf….here are the republican elected officials fiddling as Rome burns. Can they really believe that they are an impregnable force that does not consider itself indebted to those that provide their salaries??? Another thought to parallel the past….Marie Antoinette said her people could eat cake……and we all know the French guillotine put that cold-blooded idea(among many others),to a sharp an decisive end

“WE are doomed.”
Yea, I know. And its the “stupid vote” that is doing us in. Propaganda and stupidity runs this country, and runs it into the ground, it is the most powerful political force out there and it is unbeatable. You cant beat stupidity, and its what the Republicans thrive on.
Stupid people are going to do stupid things like vote Republicans into office, and they are going to do that because they are stupid. That is why we have Republicans in this country, along with other pestilences like roaches, rats, fungus, ect. Its a fact of life, there will always be vermin, even in our political infrustructure.

After reading all the posts I am left speechless. I am not sure how much worse things can get but I think we are getting dangerously close to a breaking point. Even people who do have jobs are seeing their hours cut, a bad sign that we are definitely in a downward spiral. What’s next?

“I think we are getting dangerously close to a breaking point”
Well, maybe that is what we need that has been long, long overdue…a breaking point. These Republicans just dont know when to quit. They have pushed everyone past their limit.
Nov elections, I dont know, I would expect to see every single Republican fired and removed from office by the majority, but something stupid always seems to prevail. Some idiotic excuse to put them back there so they can do more damage by those who like to ignore, at the last minute, the degree of damage they will enact on the economy and job market.
I do hope the voters do something rational this time, and get the rest of the Republican infestation out of our legislature. This economy cannot stand any more of the crap they dish out, it is broken and will be beyond any mode of repair if the Republican infestation is not removed so the economy can begin to recover.
