Oakland, CA (July 6) – The New York Yankees defeated the Oakland Athletics last night by the score of 6-1. CC Sabathia made the start and pitched 7 2/3 brilliant innings, he allowed one run on seven hits.
Sabathia walked three and struck out ten. Dave Robertson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings giving up no runs or hits and striking out two. Alex Rodriguez hit two home runs to carry the offense for the Yankees.
Rodriguez drove in five runs with his two hits both being home runs the only homeruns for the Yankees. Brett Gardner, Jorge Posada, and Curtis Granderson each had a hit. The other RBI was by Derek Jeter. Oakland had a RBI single in the first inning and had a 1-0 lead until the third when the Yankees scored five runs. Rodriguez hit a grand slam to cap off the inning. Rodriguez would add a solo home run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Sabathia is unbeaten since May 23 and has won seven straight for just the second time in his career. Girardi said, “It’s what he did for us last year and what we’re all used to seeing. CC has been an ace for a long time. In this league or the National League, he’s been very, very good. He’s on a string right now, and he’s pitching great.”
Rodriguez has been showing more power since his hip has been getting better. He hit his 596th and 597th home runs. The magic plateau of 600 home runs is within grasp and could be accomplished before the All Star Break this week.
The Yankees will go for the sweep of the three game series tonight with A.J. Burnett on the mound.
