Yankees beaten in 14 innings on walk-off single

By:  Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Toronto, Canada (June 5) – The New York Yankees were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 3-2 this afternoon.  Andy Pettitte made the start and was great once again.  He pitched 7 2/3 innings giving up two runs on five hits and struck out a season high 10 batters.  Pettitte only walked two; the offense though only scored two runs on a two-run home run by Derek Jeter.  Another game controlled by pitching.

Joba Chamberlain pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings giving up two hits and striking out three batters.  Damaso Marte pitched 2/3 of an inning walking one batter, Dave Robertson pitched 1 1/3 giving up one hit, and one walk and Chan Ho Park pitched two innings giving up a hit and two walks but striking out three.  Chad Gaudin got the loss pitching 1/3 of an inning giving up a hit, run and a walk.  The Yankees offense had their chance in the seventh inning, the Yankees were leading 2-1 and had second and third one out and Jeter lined into a double play.  Toronto came right back to tie it in the bottom of the seventh and it stayed that way until the bottom of the 14th when Aaron Hill hit a walk-off single.

The Yankees have now dropped two in a row to Toronto.  The Yankees have scored three runs in two games and 23 innings against the Blue Jays who are showing they are for real at least for the time being.  Jeter and Brett Gardner each had two hits.  Nick Swisher, Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Francisco Cervelli each had a hit.  Mark Teixeira who has been struggling just about all season was 0-6 with five strikeouts.  The Jays now trail the Yankees by two games in the loss column; the Yankees will try to salvage the finale of the three game series tomorrow afternoon with Javier Vazquez making the start.
