R.A. Dickey's streak ends in Puerto Rico

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

San Juan (Jun 28th) – The New York Mets were defeated by the Florida Marlins this evening by the score of 10-3.  R.A. Dickey made the start and gave up five hits and five runs in five innings.  Dickey walked one and struck out three.  Fernando Nieve pitched two innings and gave up two hits and two runs.  Ryota Igarashi pitched an inning giving up two hits and three runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Mets did get two home runs from Jason Bay.  Bay provided all the offense driving in all three runs.  Jose Reyes had a hit, David Wright had two hits and Josh Thole had a hit.  The Marlins scored a run in the first inning with some help from Reyes who made an error.  The Marlins also scored a run in the third on a infield hit that Reyes could not handle.  Dickey gave up a two run double to Gaby Sanchez and a RBI double to Hanley Ramirez both coming in the third inning.  Bay hit his home runs in the second and seventh inning but they weren’t enough as the Marlins feasted on the Mets pitching.  The Marlins got solo home runs from Chris Coghlan and Cody Ross.

The Mets just were not able to get anything going other than Bay and Dickeys magic ran out.  I don’t know if it was the tropical temperatures and winds but Dickey just did not have his knuckler dancing like it usually does and his perfect 6-0 record was ruined.  Dickey is now 6-1 on the season and the Mets are 1 1/2 games behind the Braves for first place in the NL East.  The Mets and Marlins will play game two of their three game series tomorrow night with Hisanori Takahashi taking on Nate Robertson.
