Bronx, NY (June 2) – The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 9-1 this evening. Phil Hughes got the start and dominated. He pitched seven innings giving up one run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Chad Gaudin pitched the final two innings giving up three hits and one walk. Hughes is now 7-1 on the year with a 2.54 ERA. I know it is early but he is going to be in consideration for the CY Young if he keeps this up. The difference in him now is that he does throw all of his pitches but also the confidence he is showing on the mound.
The Yankees offense was led by Robinson Cano who extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Cano had two singles and a home run. He leads the team in home runs with 12 and has a 373 batting average. Nick Swisher had a big night with three hits and three RBI. Alex Rodriguez had two hits, Curtis Granderson also had three hits and he had two RBI. Jorge Posada returned from the disabled list and contributed a hit and a walk as the DH. Brett Gardner had a hit and an RBI. The Yankees racked up 14 hits and were 5 for 14 with runners in scoring position, they left seven runners on base.
The Yankees got the scoring started in the second inning with four runs. Cano led off the inning with a single followed by a Posada walk. Granderson came up to the plate and hit a double that scored two runs. Derek Jeter hit into a fielder’s choice that got the out at home but put runners at second and third. Nick Swisher hit a ground rule double to score two more runs and give the Yankees a 4-0 lead. The Yankees scored two more runs in the third on a single by Rodriguez and a single by Cano. The Yankees had first and second, after a Posada fly out Granderson singled to load the bases with one out. Francisco Cervelli got hit with a pitch for the tough RBI to make it 5-0 and Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. The Orioles would get a run in the sixth inning on a Miguel Tejada double and Ty Wigginton single to make it 6-1. The Yankees were in complete control with Hughes on the mound but really broke open the game with two runs in the seventh to make it 8-1 and then they tacked on another run in the eighth to make it 9-1.
The Yankees have now won four straight and improved their record to 33-20 which is a season best 13 games over 500. The Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon with CC Sabathia on the mound. The Yankees are also 5-1 on their current seven game homestand. The Yankees remain 2 1/2 games behind the first place Tampa Bay Rays who won their second in a row over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees will head to Toronto after the game tomorrow to begin a three game series on Friday night.
