Baltimore, MD (June 13) – The New York Mets continued to win; they defeated the Orioles by the score of 11-4 this afternoon. The Mets who won two in a row on the road yesterday for the first time since last July have now won three in a row on the road.
Mike Pelfrey made the start and pitched six innings giving up nine hits and three runs with three walks and a strikeout. It was not his most dominant start but he did get the win and improved to 9-1 on the season. Jenrry Mejia pitched a inning giving up two hits and a run, Ryota Igarashi pitched a perfect inning and Raul Valdez pitched a perfect inning to close the game out.
The Mets offense was led by Jason Bay who went 4-4 with a solo home run and a walk. Jose Reyes had two hits; Angel Pagan had a hit and an RBI. Ike Davis had a hit, Chris Carter had a three-run home run and Jose Feliciano had two hits. Alex Cora had three hits and two RBI. Henry Blanco had a hit. Bay had been in a 1-24 slump and Wright hit two home runs. The Mets had been struggling on the road and this is a huge boost to their confidence. Bay said, “We know how well we’ve played, and at some point you’ve got to start winning some games on the road or you can’t make up any ground.” Manager Jerry Manuel said, “The offense kind of carried us today. The offense pretty much took over the game.”
The Mets got started right away in the first inning. Wright hit the first of his two home runs and Carter hit a three-run blast. The Mets scored five in the first, one in the third, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more run in the seventh. They never trailed in this game. The Mets improved to 5-1 this year in interleague play. The Mets had not swept a road series since sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers from Sept 1-3, 2008. The Mets will now head to Cleveland after an off day tomorrow and then will finish off their all-interleague road trip at Yankee Stadium with three games over the weekend.
The Mets remain a game and a half behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. If the Mets want to be a serious playoff contender they have to win on a road and they are off to a good start with that on this road trip. The Mets will now hope to take advantage of a poor Cleveland team before facing their cross-town rivals and defending World Series Champion Yankees.
