Kyrgyzstan (Jun 28) – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was happy to report that Kyrgyzstan has welcomed the referendum held yesterday in a peaceful and orderly fashion. Noted was the good turnout at the polls despite the recent violence within the country.
The recent violence has displaced upwards to 300,000 people within Kyrgyzstan and sent an additional 100,000 fleeing across the borders to neighboring Uzbekistan.
UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, Miroslav Jenca, met with interim President Rosa Otunbayeva in which he expressed his appreciation that the referendum was conducted “smoothly and without major incidents.”
The decalaration of the referendum is a successful step towards promoting the rule of law and establishing a legitimate and democratically elected government for Kyrgyzstan.
