Johan pitches well again and has nothing to show for it as Mets blow lead

By: Gary W. Marchese Jr.

San Diego, CA (June 2) – The New York Mets were defeated by the San Diego Padres by the score of 5-1 last night.  Johan Santana started the game and pitched well as he usually does.  Santana went seven innings giving up no runs on five hits, he did walk five batters and struck out three.   Santana is 4-2 on the year with a 2.76 ERA.  I can only imagine how many more wins he would have it he wasn’t on the Mets the last two years.  I would probably guess somewhere between 10-12 more wins.

The offense did not do much again; Jason Bay had three hits and a walk.  Angel Pagan, David Wright and Jeff Francoeur all had hits.  The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Pagan and Wright singled.  It was first and third one out and Francoueur singled to give the Mets the lead.  The Mets would hold on to that very slim lead until the ninth inning.  Francisco Rodriguez came on in the eighth inning to get a four out save.  He did get out of the eighth inning but in the ninth gave up the tying run.  Tony Gwynn singled, stole second and scored on a David Eckstein single.  Raul Valdez gave up a walk-off grand slam to Adrian Gonzalez in the 11th inning to lose the game.

The Mets were looking for their first series win of the year on the road and also to have a 3-3 roadtrip.  The 3-3 road trip isn’t great but for the Mets it would of been something to build on and instead they suffered a heart breaking loss.  Santana five days ago pitched eight shutout innings and had nothing to show for it as he got a no decision and last night seven-shutout innings and another no decision.  Santana said, “It’s been crazy, but there isn’t much I can do.”  The Mets are 1-4 over Santana’s last five starts even though his ERA is 0.74.  The Mets have now played 55 straight road games without winning two straight, the franchise record is 64 straight.  The Mets will get a day off to collect themselves and then play the Marlins at home for a three game weekend series.  R.A. Dickey will make the start on Friday night.
