Washington, D.C. (Jun 28) – H.R. 4213 American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act is a bill that would help American families get by during the Greatest Recession in American history, a bill designed to put American workers back to work, and provide for an unemployment extension.
The current version of the bill blocked via filibuster by the Republican Party is designed to cut taxes for businesses, facilitate small business loans, and increase investments in highways and other infrastructure projects. The bill also would extend unemployment extensions under the current EUC program while providing housing assistance to individuals that have lost their jobs providing a roof over themselves and families.
To date, nearly a million American’s have lost any form of assistance via unemployment insurance programs due to the Republican Party reneging on their original March 2010 agreement, then titled H.R. 4213 Tax Extenders Bill, when Republicans ran a filibuster against the original bill passed by the House in December 2009. The original bill was to be fully offset and paid for utilizing recaptured TARP monies. This was unacceptable for unknown reasons to Senate Republicans hence, the creation of the existing bill to which, Senate Republicans stated they would completely endorse.
The current revision of H.R. 4213 was trimmed back by nearly 50 percent, by cutting the health care benefits regarding COBRA, removing the additional $25 per week increase in unemployment benefits, along with drastic reductions in Medicaid, Medicare, and Tricare. The price tag of the original H.R. 4213, nearly $200 billion dollars. Currently the bill carries a price tag closer to $118 billion with over 70 percent of the bill being paid for with offsets.
American families are now facing a crisis never witnessed in current times, homelessness, lack of medical care, and children simply going hungry.
Senate Republicans still refuse to allow for what little assistance unemployment or unemployment extension have to offer to those that lost their jobs due to fiscal mismanagement, and failed economic policies created within the past administration. Senate Republicans have proven once again, if given the choice, supporting their rich campaign donors with trillion dollar bailouts, or keeping a roof over the heads of American families, American’s lose out.
Rumors are abundant regarding one final Senate move to end the Republican filibuster, Constitutional Action known as the “Nuclear Clause” an option threatened by Senate Republican Frist in 2005. This clause is a procedural ruling once invoked states that the will of the majority will be effective. Senate Finance Committee members need to go back to the bill, have the bill rescinded and laid back on the floor as the original House bill was written in 2009, that is utilizing recaptured TARP monies, and then enact the Nuclear Option and get American breadwinners back to work, and allow American families a fighting chance to return to a normal life.
When the Senate reconvenes this afternoon, prior to the extended Fourth of July recess, the plan is to take up a Small Business bill. One would only hope that by Wednesday of this week in celebration of the nation’s Declaration of Independence, the Senate Leadership enacts the Nuclear Option as described above sending the original bill introduced and passed by the House, back in December 2009 to President Obama’s desk for signature. This would truly be America’s Independence Day, the promise of fair representation and taxation to which the Republican Party completely refutes.
God Bless America!

I submit 1.2 million without UI equates to more like 3 million people effected by this. I wonder what the Senate would do if a natural disaster effected 3 million people. Would they let them rot? That is 3 million men women and CHILDREN!
I have always voted Republican I have just changed to Independent.
The Republicans should be congratulated for trying to balance spending by throwing the unemployed under the bus.
I sure hope they all have a wonderful July break. I know I will be adding more stuff to Craig’s list to try to make ends meet.
Happy fourth of July everyone.

Greg,
I agree and I am a Republican that will not vote down GOP lines again. The people on welfare, that never paid into the system and the wall streeters are still getting there’s, the people in the middle, the core of America are just plain out of luck. These Senators watch thousands of jobs each month go overseas and they scratch their heads and say just raise taxes. The technology is not there yet to create the jobs we need so why don’t we get the jobs overseas back? Because they are getting there’s and they do not have to worry about a home or food or gas.

Greg and Denny,
I would hope that you take a second look at what the republicans are doing. Don’t just take this articles word for it. The demacrates have but items in this bill that will distroy small business. If this bill passes the way it is, you will have a few more weeks of unemployment coming to you, but you will not find a new job for years to come.

I too am a Republican, but after seeing the Republicans vote against a bill that extends unemployment benefits to people who lost their jobs to no fault of their own gets me angry. The financial markets that have created this mess have been bailed out with our tax money and now the Republicans want to go easy on the financial markets with the new financial reform. The Republicans have chosen their side, and it’s clearly not with the American people. I have changed to Independent and I will remember every Republican that voted against this bill come election time.

seems that they will swiftly give money to big corporations to let those CEO’s spend time at 5 star resorts, instead of unemployment so that individuals can make their house note until they find work

You know what’s interesting? The politicians not thinking straight on this issue is really the same as the English underestimating the colonies. Now I’m not a “tea bagger”, and I do not want to revert back to the 1700′s way of handling things, but the underestimating of millions of Americans who are unemployed or who are working but know someone who is struggling, adds up to a whole lot of people. Even people who are not on unemployment because perhaps they didn’t qualiy…are STILL unemployed, right? So it’s an overall “screw you” from the GOP that everyone sees, even when they try to say it’s fiscally responsible..hey GOP? You cannot say these things AFTER you gave hundreds of BILLIONS to Wallstreet, who then gave HUGE bonuses to their employees, used it for vacations, and overall abused the TAXPAYER’S money. I just cannot fathom what they’re thinking.
Oh and? Here comes the BUSH tax cuts, which, would put our deficit near the trillion mark if renewed…I can’t wait to hear their arguement on keeping those for their wealthy friends in place.

Maybe the idea of a revolution is in order? We need the attention of the people who are working because they think this bill is about unemployment only. They aee not seeing the 700,000 more jobs in the public sector that are going away, teachers, police, firefighters, all in danger of losing jobs without the bill. More corporations taking away our jobs and getting a tax break for doing so. Low taxes for the financial crooks who caused this mess too….

Let’s go to the streets and get crazy. Make some signs and some noise. Everyone that has been affected by this insane vote should show up at their local TWC office and carry signs. The squeaky wheel always gets the oil.

So this is what it means to be an American citizen. Congress conveniently ignores a simple fact. With a devastating event such as this, everything connected to that event also becomes an insurmountable problem. I have been a single parent more years than I care to discuss. I have no extended family. This week we’ll try to find a way to get food; next week we won’t be able to pay for car insurance. In Pennsylvania, you are either insured or you don’t drive. Then we need to find a plan for being homeless, because that is coming up in the next month. I could go on and on about how this Congressional debacle is destroying what might have been a stable family that has some resources. I am not in that group. I live from paycheck to paycheck and unemployment provided a little safety net. The job market is really depressing. I’ve spoken to agencies that have more than 400 applicants for one position. A 4-year degree grad took a position as entry-level receptionist. Competition is unbelievable. I couldn’t get a job at a convenience store…the returning college students have that covered. I could go on, but what is the point? Vote Republican? I don’t think so. Democrat…right. Each party is bogged down with their own agendas. It’s a crime that their struggling constituents are not part of their considerations. If I was a member of Congress, I don’t think I would like to be remembered as the vote cast against everything we supposedly stand for as a country. Truth, justice, and the American Way. Right.Heaven help us.

These Fat Cats really suck… Eating Big thick juicy steaks and nice lobster tails for all three meals and im lucky if i can find a bologna sandwich. These Fat cats of the GOP need a taste of their own meds. They need to get a pay cut. They dont even work, Have you ever watched the floor in the senate??? Well… They call that a job… Members of the Greedy Old Party need a nice wake up call. Let them and their families starve, let them go stand in the unemployment or foostamp lines for hours not knowing when their next meal is. Let them walk for miles to look for work with no promise because of no gas or no bus money. Let them sleep on the streets. That is What the GOP has done to america. Thank you GOP, You guys suck.

How about if all those Repulicans didn’t have jobs and/or medical and couldn’t pay their own bills, I bet they would jump right on that bandwagon. Maybe they need to struggle to pay bills, middle class people like us who pay our bills and taxes and get booted out of a job, which I haven’t even received an extension, just missed it by one week apparently. And we can’t even hardly put groceries on the table, looking for jobs in a small community is very difficult and with the ecomony the way it is even harder. So let them just keep getting those big fat checks and giving all that money to CEO’s of companies which I owe money to for car payments and house payments but they just keep giving it to them and we start losing everything to them as well, our vehicles and homes so they can just keep going on those lavish vacations and nice fancy cars and houses while we try and just put groceries on the table. Thanks to all you REPUBLICANS I know I won’t EVER vote FOR ANOTHER ONE IN MY STATE EVER AGAIN.

The republican’s weren’t worried about the deficit when that big insurance company and their friends the Wall Street execs were giving themselves bonuses with taxpayer money!!! Next election – let Congress feel the sting of the unemployment lines!!! No more raping and pillaging the middle class!!! – How many years have you paid taxes? 30? 40? Your government bails out bankers and Wall Street execs using your tax dollars – but unemployment is allowed to expire? What happened to “by the people” or “for the people”? Or are the big campaign contributors the only “people” who count to congress? They are playing games AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME while you are wondering how to feed your kids? Figure it out! Malfeasance – Failure of a public official to perform their duties!!! Next Election MAKE YOURSELF MATTER BY VOTING!!! 10% unemployment carries 10% of the vote! Use it!! Fire them all next election or recall every Congress member NOW for Malfeasance – Failure of a public official to perform their duties!!! Next Election – Lets get people elected who actually represent all the People- this current congress represents only special interest groups!

They say the unemployment figures are a certain amount. They are only accounting for those that can apply for UI. For those who do not qualify or have fallen out of the system and now reside in the streets or hopefully with other family members, these folks are not counted.
We are not looking for hand outs, we want our jobs back. No one cried when the Mills closed, when the Furniture Factories closed, Steel closed down and still no one cried. We need to make a loud noise that they can hear.
We gave the crooks the coshie jobs (GOV) and they give us the shaft. They vote for their raise and deny giving a cost of living increase to the elderly stating that there is no cost of living increase this year. They SUCK a big green one. They are totally corrupt and need to be replaced. I start by VOTING AGAINST REPUBLICANS totally. They can’t balance a budget. They stole from the Social Security for years and keep pushing us back on the dates we are allowed to retire.
I Think we should all get our tents and camping gear and camp out at the WhiteHouse. We own it as tax payers. Even that we can not pay taxes right now we have paid for more than 40 years so we deserve a place to rest our heads.
This is the CHANGE we voted for folks. No one really cares. We are expendable. Did you not hear their caddy responses to the job situations. They said we had 2 years to find work or go to school. No more Unemployment. There is no jobs out there. I try on a daily basis as you all do. I have humbled myself to find jobs beneith me, but still I am not accepted because of my AGE.
Once you are tossed out to the lions, they turn their heads to pretend that you do not exist. Out of site and out of mind. Maybe we will just go away.
Write to your congressman or woman and give them a scathing letter of concern. Remind them that their jobs are on the line and they will be facing the unemployment lines in November.

Ah, a voice from someone old enough to understand the big picture. “Older…” speaks the truth. But remember, “they” won’t be facing unemployment lines after November; they have wonderful medical and retirement plans. How’s that for heavy irony?
Yes, let your elected representatives in government know how you feel, loud and clear and with and educated reason.

Keep an open mind; not all politicians stink. Some of them are capable of honor and need
our support. Talk to yours; make yourself heard, bring positive pressures to bear.
We still have to have those elections and all need to do our homework and vote so that we are not guilty of government by default.

Wow! And why didn’t they do this before? I think this “nuclear clause” is the answer to getting the work done. There is so much wasted time on non-urgent items, fight over the rest, or just act like spoiled children (we didn’t win the election so we aren’t going to play). So Democrats get all the important bills back out there and pass them already!!!

The republicians forget that the middle class built this country! We built the cars, buses, the aircraft, ships, roads, bridges, power plants, oil rigs, and most everything that they take for granted. The difference between them & the Democrats is the Dems didn’t forget us after the Repubs screwed everything up for the previous 8 years and shipped out what few of our remaining base manufacturing jobs overseas, while giving their big corporate donors bailouts and tax breaks. The Dems voted for this bill to help the middle class through this hard time. The Repubs stabbed us in the back! Hopefully it will be the middle class that will build the voting machines to vote these Republican bastards out of office, the guns & ammo they can shoot themselves, with, and the caskets to bury them in! Maybe then the U.S. economy will recover!!!
Rot in hell Republicans!

I understand the angst and frustration expressed here. I am a parent of grown children who are struggling to hold onto a home or have lost one. Two have been unemployed for a long time, and all are over-worked trying to keep a roof over their heads while caring for my grandchildren. One of them is hungry, one is feeling hopeless, one has become cynical, one disillusioned, and one is angry as hell.
Sounds like a large voting block to me. The politicians who have put their electorate first need your support. So dump the scoundrels, but don’t throw out the baby with the bath. Make your vote one for the history books. Take back the country; take to the streets; take heart. We can do it. Yes, we can!!!

I got laid off by the state 1 year ago (30 years a food service slave-In the trenches) So I said to myself now that I am getting unemployment I will go to school and get associates degree In Medical office management. (2-Yr. program)When I graduate I will make more money for me, my family, the state and the Feds. So, I took out loans to do this and I have one year to go. I was expecting to get the 99 week which would have given me enough time to graduate, and now they want to pull the plug on my unemployment? This could easily lead now to me losing my home and possible divorce, nice huh?! I am no slacker or drug addict, I am trying to do the right thing! I would like to see just once In my lifetime for the government to spend the whole budget for one year only on our people! No new weapons, no money to other Govts etc…etc…etc…One years budget to us might be around a million dollars a person, now wouldnt that stimulate the econonmy and float all the boats!
