Yankees News and Notes for Thursday May 6

By Gary W. Marchese Jr.

The New York Yankees have the day off today and will begin a three game series in Boston tomorrow night. The Yankees are on a four game winning streak and have a record of 19-8. The Boston Red Sox are 14-14 and will complete their four game series with the Anaheim Angels tonight, they have won the first three games of the series.

Andy Pettitte left yesterday’s game with tightness in his forearm. He was sent for a MRI at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the results were that there was no structural damage. It is likely that Pettitte will miss his next start in Detroit. If he can’t go on Tuesday Sergio Mitre will take his place in the rotation. Javier Vazquez will be pitching Monday so this could be an interesting series in Detroit.

It looks like Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada will be ready to go tomorrow night. Joba Chamberlain filled in well for Rivera and will go back to his eighth inning role. Yankee Stadium isn’t drawing any attention this year for home runs, it is ranked eighth in home run output this season. There could be lots of reasons like the old stadium coming down, better pitching, the Yankees not hitting as many home runs especially Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez. The bottom line is no one knows the reason but home runs are a part of the game and I don’t think it matters that much. It will be interesting to see the pace of the games this weekend in Fenway Park. I don’t think the Red Sox or Yankees will change their approach because of an umpire complaining about it, it will be a big topic of discussion though.

The Yankees and Mariners games July 10th and 11th will be the first televised 3D games ever. You need to have DIRECTV HD and have 3D television sets and be able to get the YES network. Curtis Granderson who is hurt will not make the trip with the team that will head to Detroit after Boston.  It will be the only trip they make to Detroit where Granderson used to play, the Yankees will get to see their old friend Johnny Damon.  Austin Jackson who was a top prospect of the Yankees and is now the center fielder in Detroit has gotten off to a great start.
