Bronx, NY (May 3) – The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles this evening by the score of 4-1. It was the second straight game they won 4-1. A.J. Burnett continues to impress improving his record to 4-0 on the season. Burnett pitched 7 1/3 innings giving up one run on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Burnett was great but the start of the game as was his catcher Francisco Cervelli. Not only did Cervelli call a great game and show some emotion when Burnett was getting out of a second and third no out jam but he had three hits and a sac bunt. Cervelli also will be on the highlight reels with a tumbling catch into the dugout.
The Yankees once again did not have much offense; the two-four hitters did not have any hits. The bottom of the order though came through once again. Cervelli had 3 hits and Ramiro Pena had 2 RBI. Brett Gardner had a hit, walk and stolen base. The Yankees got on the board in the third inning when Cervelli hit a triple and Pena knocked him in with a RBI groundout. The Yankees would add two runs in the fifth inning. Gardner walked and Cervelli hit a single. Pena had a sacrifice bunt that the pitcher threw away allowing a run to score and putting runners at second and third with no outs. Alex Rodriguez walked to make the score 3-1 and then the Yankees would add a insurance run in the eighth inning on a sac fly by Ramiro Pena.
The Yankees with the win tonight have now won eight of nine series. They became only the fourth Yankees team in history to do that. The only series they lost was in Anaheim where they always lose. The Yankees offense has not even clicked on all cylinders and they are winning. The pitching staff has been amazing with Phil Hughes and Burnett having ERA’s below 2, other than Javier Vazquez the highest ERA is 2.74 by CC Sabathia. Burnett is 4-0, Hughes is 3-0, Sabathia is 4-1 and Andy Pettitte is 3-0. The Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow with Andy Pettitte on the mound in a 1:00PM afternoon game.
Mariano was out again today with stiffness in his side. Joba Chamberlain closed out the game for the second straight day and looked good doing so. He struck out two batters and got a easy fly ball to end the game. Joba looks like a completely different pitcher out of the bullpen, his velocity is back, and his demeanor is much better. He looks like he belongs in the pen and is going to be a good replacement for Mariano Rivera.
