UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon Urges Global Action to Restore Peace in Somalia

(May 24) – A two-day conference between the Somali government and the international community has ended in Turkey. The meeting (21-23 May) which was an international conference and was intended to review Somalia’s long term chaos, civil-war aftermath, religious based militancy, along with large scale modern sea-pirating in the Indian Ocean. The Istanbul meeting also covered the global impact on Somalia where by several international institutions, NGOs and countries those interest Somalia affairs.

The United Nations secretary general Ban-Ki Moon at the opening ceremony automatically called for the other world watching Somalia to participate assisting the Somali people to recover from the long term difficulties. Ban-Ki Moon call also related to how a joint action would help end the instability that has ravaged the war-torn country. “of the international community acts now, i think it can make a difference” Ban-Ki Moon said.

Also speaking after the conference president Sharif expressed that the conference was productive for the citizens Somalia.

To end Somalia’s long-term crisis, conferences have been occurring to establish a safe way forward. The Istanbul conference is one of the latest conferences which the Somali people may have expected a resolution for their problem, the former moderate Islamist. The current president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has a fragile project in the country because his Islamist Alliance was split into more extremist groups. Al-Shabaab Al-Muhaahediin is a spiritual group now who is spearheading the country’s largest militaristic forces. This group isolated the new president from every corner and have rejected his bid to broaden the existing legal government.

Upon rejecting the last established government, the Somali people feel not only failed in their governance by a humane structure but feel, they are facing social degradation made by their hands. The amount of refugees is increasing; the amount suffering in the refugee status is also increasing.

The weak government has itself problems of corruption and mistrust. Sources say that what is uniting the government is that the world is pushing it forward because they are given cash and was supported with a foreign soldiers. The last two nights the statehouse was under the Islamists’ attack, but the African Union in their barracks have been answering the heavy shelling;  news from the government side explains the government is teased by the public and the African Union troops are the only power  that are currently making the government of Somalia.

In the Istanbul conference, the president Sheikh Ahmed says “The Somali people are living in poverty and to earn easy money some of them harm our peaceful image” the president’s government control 6 out of the 16 districts of the capital city. Some diplomats who have participated and interest the Somalia affairs urged the president to step up efforts to establish diplomatic relationship with the self autonomous regional authorities including Somaliland and Puntland. The French foreign minister declared he will teach lessons to the pirates in the sea, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed stressed that piracy is not the only thing disturbing his government he added that what the government need is to return law and order countrywide which can then eliminate the piracy.

Somalia is a country that lies in the horn of Africa, and is convulsed by a terrible civil-war that started in beginning of nineties. After a public appraisal against the government have chased away the president Mohamed Siad Barre, the rebel movements did not afford to build a joint government. The powerful warlords divided the territory into parties. This has encouraged numerous uncontrolled armed groups. The country has been divided into several parts and because of these continuous misunderstanding, some of the parts have already declared to be recognized as independent states.

After a long time of world community endeavor to stabilize Somalia to bring a central government like any other country in the world, Somalia warlords have chosen an unaffordable path for their people. The United Nations has warned the action of the former warlords several times earlier, as the country failed while facing tougher more tribal and civil-strife, droughts, and massive starvation in terms of food and water shortage.

In an era of modern times, that the world intelligence have developed; Somalia’s youth having massive unemployment sought refuge to a more dangerous world. Younger generations were found training with the world’s most neglected and isolated groups, with no knowledge of where their dependency comes from; community leaders also participated joint fanatic battles that occurred internationally then returned to Somalia to spread their experiences.

This has recruited the largest number of young people in Somalia. In the sea direction, Indian Ocean became full of sea pirates. The world’s largest route for the commercial ships was blocked. The young jobless Somalis turned away from fishing and their boats were now prepared for a massive engagement of profit minded violence based on abductions. The abductions have targeted anyone who passed the Somalia coast and suffered the Europeans whereby millions of US dollars have been exchanged for their release.

However, the Istanbul conference showed the government, a good cooperation and recognition but the government does not have any proposal to end the crisis unless the extremists brings hope and offer their own to the Somali people, latest public opinion shows.
