Washington, D.C. (May 22) – Today, President Obama released an executive order establishing a National Commission on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and offshore drilling. The Commission will consist of individuals from the engineering, scientific, and environmental communities as well as, the oil and gas industries.
The purpose of the commission is to establish and develop safeguards, and mitigating the impact of oil spills associated with offshore drilling. The commission will be examining the overall impact on the environment, public health, and economic effects involving improvements to federal laws, regulations, and industry practices.
The Commission will submit a finalized public report of its findings to the President within 6 months of the Commission’s first meeting.
On the agenda for the Commission will be, public hearings soliciting information from Federal, State, and local officials, nongovernmental organizations, private entities, along with other industry and workforce representatives as necessary to conduct its investigation.
The overall staff and funding of the Commission will be handled by the Secretary of Energy, and will provide the Commission with all necessary support services to carry out its mission. The Commission will not be allowed to interfere with any concurrent or ongoing criminal or civil legal actions surrounding the Deepwater Horizon incident.
In other related events regarding the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, BP will be announcing today how effective its “siphoning” tube is handling the flow of crude and natural gases escaping from the drill hole.
Meanwhile, ground and aerial crews continue to assist in the rescue and aid of a wide variety of marine life that have encountered the crude oil being washed both ashore and towards the Gulf Stream from the oil gusher 5,000 feet below the Gulf’s service. BP has been ordered to use a less hazardous form of oil dispersant as environmental studies regarding the current chemicals in use are underway.
