Philadelphia, PA (May 1) – Roy Halladay was his typical dominating self as he pitched a complete game three hit shutout 10-0 over the Mets. The Phillies wanted to make sure that everyone was aware that they are the two time defending NL Champions. The Mets had no answer for Halladay as most teams don’t. Halladay is now 5-1 on the year.
Mike Pelfrey who has been brilliant all year long struggled today. Pelfrey pitched four innings giving up eight hits and six runs with one walk and a couple of strikeouts. Raul Valdez was not any better out of the pen as he gave up five hits and four runs in three innings. Manny Acosta pitched a perfect inning. Jason Bay, David Wright and Henry Blanco provided all of the offense with a hit each. Mike Pelfrey extended his scoreless streak to 27 and then gave up six runs in the fourth inning. Chase Utley led off the inning with a single that deflected off Jose Reyes’s glove. Ryan Howard and Jason Werth followed with singles. Juan Castro hit a two run double to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead. Carlos Ruiz singled to center but a run was cut down when Angel Pagan threw out Juan Castro at home plate. Halladay had a single that was followed by a two run home run off the bat of Shane Victorino.
There was a sellout for the 50th straight game at Citizens Bank Park. The crowd seemed to be in it and it looks like this rivalry is growing again with the Mets getting off to a good start. Roy Halladay threw his 17th career shutout and 52nd career complete game. He has now tied Colorado’s Ubaldo Jimenez for the league lead in wins with five.
The Mets will have their ace going tomorrow in the rubber game of the three game series between the two teams. They would love to get a win and be able to win a series in Philly coming off of their great home stand. The Mets went 9-1 and followed that up with their eighth straight victory yesterday, but then lost today to set up the dramatic finish to this weekend series
