Day not all good as Yanks sweep O's

By: Gary W. Marchese Jr.

Bronx, NY (May 5) – The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 7-5 this afternoon at Yankee Stadium.  Andy Pettitte made the start but was removed after five innings because of stiffness in his forearm.  The Yankees who were relatively healthy all spring and the month of April have been coming down with some injuries in the past week.

Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada have been out and now Andy Pettitte is the latest.  Joe Girardi said after the game it is something he is going to have to manage all season, that it is a fine line between are they hurt or just sore.  The thing about the Yankees is they have older players that are very important and you have to be careful with them.

The Yankees got on the board in the first inning on a Nick Johnson solo home run.  He would finish the game with three hits and two walks.  The Yankees would build a picket fence with a run in the second inning on a Nick Swisher solo home run and then they added a run in the third on an Alex Rodriguez RBI single.  It could have been more for the Yankees but they could not break open the game.

The Orioles scored a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1 but the Yankees answered right back with three runs to break the game open at 6-1.  Ty Wigginton hit a two run home run to cut the lead to 6-3 but when the Yankees scored a insurance run in the eighth inning it seemed that the game was pretty much over at 7-3.  The ninth inning got interesting though with Dave Robertson, Boone Logan, and then finally Alfredo Aceves closing it out, the Orioles scored two runs and made the Yankees sweat out the victory 7-5.

Andy Pettitte pitched five innings giving up one run on six hits with two walks and strikeouts.  Sergio Mitre came on in relief of Pettitte and pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up three hits and two runs.  Damaso Marte struck out the one batter he faced for the second straight game.  Dave Robertson who has pitched awful this season gave up two hits and two runs in 2/3 of an inning.  Boone Logan got an out but also walked two guys and Alfredo Aceves was called on to get the final out and the save.

The most pressing issue of the game though was the health of Andy Pettitte, it was revealed after the game that he did not have any damage and he should be OK.  He has inflammation around his elbow area and for right now the Yankees are taking it day by day, they are going to give him treatment and see how the arm responds.  Pettitte is still scheduled to make his next start and it does not look like there will be a disabled list involved at all.  The Yankees head to Boston with a four game winning streak, they are expected to have Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera back and ready to go on Friday.
