Bronx, NY (May 3) – The New York Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 4-1 this evening. This was a nice crisp efficient game for the Yankees. The game seemed to fly by as CC Sabathia threw a gem. Sabathia pitched eight innings giving up six hits, one run with two walks and two strikeouts. The only rough spot that Sabathia hit was in the seventh inning when he had a argument with the umpire about balls and strikes. Joe Girardi raced out and the infielders also came to the mound to calm the big man down. Sabathia was able to complete that inning and the next one to get his fourth win of the year. Sabathia improved to 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA.
Joba Chamberlain picked up his first save of the year. The reason that Chamberlain was in the game was because Mariano Rivera was not available because of a side injury. It was reported after the game that Rivera suffered the injury on Saturday but he thinks he will be ready to go tomorrow. Chamberlain nailing down the save looked like a glimpse into the future for the Yankees. Chamberlain has pitched well out of the bullpen and was hitting 95 on the gun tonight; Rivera can’t pitch forever and who better to replace him then Chamberlain.
The Yankees defense went so well tonight that it made up for their hitting. Randy Winn provided the big hit of the game with a three run home run in the fourth inning. The Yankees were trailing 1-0 before tying it in the fourth on a Nick Swisher single off the wall. Winn stepped up to the plate and drilled his first home run as a Yankee to make it 4-1. Brett Gardner and Alex Rodriguez each had a hit but Nick Swisher had the biggest night of all with three. Swisher came into this series having only one hit at home but is now on fire. Winn snapped a 491 at bat homer-less streak.
The Yankees will try and make it two in a row over the Birds with A.J. Burnett on the mound tomorrow night.
