Yankees News and Notes 4/22/10

Oakland, CA (Apr 22) -The New York Yankees are set to take on the Oakland Athletics at 3:30PM today.  They will send ace CC Sabathia to the hill against Dallas Braden.  The Yankees are looking for their second straight sweep and 7th win in a row.  They come into the game with a record of 11-3, good for first place in the AL East just ahead of the 10-4 Tampa Bay Rays. 

Yankees Lineup: Jeter (SS), Johnson (1B), Teixeira (DH), Rodriguez (3B), Cano (2B), Swisher (RF), Thames (LF), Cervelli(C), Gardner (CF)

Hughes said that last night when he was looking for that ball that hit off him and became the first hit it felt like he was looking for it for 8 minutes.  He said he didn’t realize that it didn’t pop up in the air until he looked towards third base and saw Alex Rodriguez pointing at it.  Manager Joe Girardi said that “it was as good as it gets” and Jorge Posada said it reminded him of the near no hitter Hughes had in 2007.  Hughes did not throw a single changeup and said that sometimes your stuff is so good you will stay away from a certain pitch.

Joba Chamberlain and Mariano Rivera are not available for today’s game after pitching in the last two games.

Yankees pitchers have held opponents to 3 runs or fewer in each of their wins during the 6 game winning streak.  The Yankees have outscored their opponents 33-13.  They have held the opposition to 5 or fewer runs in each of the last 10 games. 

The Yankees lead the major leagues in walks with 75.  Alex Rodriguez returned from the disabled list on 5/8/09 and since that time the Yankees record is 111-51.  This includes the regular season last year, the postseason and beginning of this season.  That is a amazing record and shows just how valuable he is to the Yankees.

The Yankees are 8-0 this season when leading after 6 innings.  They were 71-2 last season when leading after 6 innings.  The Yankees 79-2 record over the last 2 seasons when leading after 6 innings is the best in the majors.

Derek Jeter needs 2 more doubles to tie Don Mattingly for third place on the franchises all time list.  Mariano Rivera needs 2 strikeouts to tie Roger Clemens for 10th place in franchise history.  Jeter has 440 career doubles and Rivera has 1,012 career strikeouts.
