Boston, MA (Apr 4) – The New York Yankees opened up their 2010 season as defending champions in Boston. Opening day is always special as all teams are at the same place, everyone is in first place and no one is in last place. The Yankees and Red Sox are ancient and fierce rivals so what can be better then starting the season against each other.
CC Sabathia was on the mound for the Yankees going up against Josh Beckett for the Red Sox. These two pitchers are the aces of their respective staffs. They both cruised through the first inning.
The Yankees struck first in the second inning with back to back homeruns by Jorge Posada and Curtis Granderson. The Red Sox came back with a run in the third but the Yankees added a few runs and took a 5-2 lead.
CC Sabathia was cruising along with 1 run and 1 hit allowed through 4 2/3 innings. He allowed 3 straight hits in the 5th inning and a run allowed but escaped further trouble with an inning ending strikeout to Jacoby Ellsbury.
CC Sabathia started off the 6th inning with a walk to Dustin Pedroia and then a double to Victor Martinez and a triple by Kevin Youkilis, the score was now 5-4 Yankees and Sabathia was about to come out of the game. He ended his night with a groundball out to David Ortiz but then David Robertson came into the game and allowed a hit to tie the game. He got out of the inning with the game tied at 5-5. CC Sabathia final line was 5 1/3 innings, 5 runs and 6 hits. He walked
The game turned into a back and forth contest as the Yankees scored 2 runs in the 7th inning with a Robinson Cano rbi groundout and then a Jorge Posada rbi single. The Boston Red Sox came right back in the bottom of the inning and scored 2 runs on a 2 run homerun by Dustin Pedroia off of Chan Ho Park who was making his Yankees debut. He got rudely introduced to the rivalry, he had a dominating spring but that means absolutely nothing.
Park was taking out of the game after giving up a booming double off of the wall to Kevin Youkilis who had a triple and 2 doubles after that hit. Chan Ho Park pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits. Damaso Marte came in to face David Ortiz and walked him but a run scored during that at bat on a passed ball. The run was charged to Park. Joba Chamberlain came on to finish the 7th inning and the Yankees didn’t score in the 8th inning off of flame thrower Daniel Bard.
The Red Sox scored an insurance run off of Joba Chamberlain in the 8th inning. Jonathan Papelbon the closer for the Red Sox came on to close out the game and he did just that giving up a single to Jorge Posada but that is it.
The teams will have an off day tomorrow and then play game 2 of the series on Tuesday night. A.J. Burnett will face Jon Lester, the story of this game was the offense as the pitching was not sharp at all. The Yankees blew leads of 5-1, 5-2 and 7-5 in this game and I am sure the manager won’t be happy about that.
There are 161 games left to play though and the Yankees started out 0-8 against Boston last season and ended up winning the division and then the World Series. The offensive star for the Yankees was Jorge Posada who had a couple of singles and a homerun. Derek Jeter had 2 hits and an rbi, Robinson Cano and Brett Gardner also had 2 hits and a rbi.
