Washington, D.C. (Apr 21) – The 40th anniversay celebrating Earth Day takes place tomorrow. In his release to the public, Vice President Biden states, “Today I am kicking off the Administration’s celebration of Earth Day in advance by announcing $452 million in Recovery Act “Retrofit Ramp-Up” awards. These awards will help make energy efficiency affordable for hundreds of thousands of homeowners and businesses, and are expected to create tens of thousands of jobs in the process.”
Referencing himself as the President’s “point man on the Recovery Act,” American’s are reminded that the Act also includes the United States commitment to the “biggest investment ever in clean energy.” This investment is creating jobs, albeit on a slow scale, in “countless communities”.
Earth Day is not about government action, although that action is taking place. It is a reminder to all that we must protect our water, air, and environment by taking action not just at the federal level, but within each community around the globe.
President Obama expresses his wish that “all of us pitch in and participate in the Earth Day of Service. For ways in which you can show your support, visit Serve.gov/earthday.
