Nigerian Police to Pay 100 million Naira for Illegal Killing

The Maiduguri state High Court of Nigeria has ordered the Nigerian Police Force to pay the total sum of 100 million Naira as a compensation fee for the murder of a 70 year-old man, Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed during a religious crisis between and Islamic group known as Boko Haram and the Nigerian Police Force nine months ago.

The Nigerian Police Force were said to have moved into the region to restore law and order but could not identify the civilians from the Islamic militants, so they decided to boycott the rule of engagement and open fire on all which killed a civilian known as Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed.

The High Court stated that after the investigation and evidences provided at the court of law, the Court founds the Nigerian Police Force guilty of the assault and the deceased was without any weapon and not among the Islamic militants.

On the other hand, the deceased Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed was the father-in-law to the Islamic militants who engaged in the massacre of civilians in the name of promoting Islam. It was reported that Nigerian Police Force had no choice than to shoot him as they saw him in the midst of the crowd since he is the linage of the leader of the Islamic militants.

After the religious crisis, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the IG of Police, Borno State Governor and his Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice was sued to court for murder, as the family member of Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed said “Our brother will not die in vain.”

Justice Mustapha stated that based on the evidence and witnesses brought before the court, the late Fugu Mohammed was illegally murdered by “members of the Nigeria Police Force,” and fined the Nigeria Police Force 100 million naira as composition. Also, demanded that the body of Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed should be released to his family for proper burial.
