Indian Paisa League: Profitable losses

The Indian Premier League cricket games are only half way through and people have started tuning for news channels more often to hear about it than the sports channels. Controversy after controversy, IPL has shattered even the power houses of the country. With crores and crores of rupees flowing through the league in the name of auction of players, teams, sponsorships and broadcasting rights it has proven that no bird can fly over money. Meanwhile the recent auctions for new teams have overwhelmed the auctions for Spanish and Italian Premier Leagues for placing the third highest bid amount for sports clubs.

The harsh reality is that the money going into the IPL is not taxed as the parent organisation, Board of Cricket Control of India is registered as a charity organisation. It is closely following the European Football Associations in its yearly profits and is soon to overtake them.

The recent blame game has begun with the two new team auctions which saw pretty bad lobbying and power plays. Wealthy business empires and groups or consortia were trying hard to fill the gap, when a hardly known player came into the fields and bagged the new team for a not so profitable city in Southern India, Kochi. There seemed to be Shashi Tharoor the State Minister for External Affairs and former UN Under Secretary masterminding the whole game. But his voice was valid as he has been voted from the state which is to host the team..

But to get things worse, the man behind IPL, Modi want a team in his home state and was allegedly asked the  Rendezvous consortium to move away from the Kochi bid and offered money to them. The views and news are still on and Tharoor and Modi are under the scanner of the government and anti-corruption agencies.

The future of the all-controversy minister Shashi Tharoor famed for his untimely tweets is to be seen by April 17 when the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh returns from his foreign visit. And the whole country is watching for this

I think no one can get BCCI and IPL out of this financial fiasco and corruption since it is a network of politics, sportsperson, filmdom and underworld dons who are behind it. The cheated common man and cricket fans should step forward to bring an end to it.

The new revelations of 27 players bribed for match fixing has brought more than shame to the gentleman’s game.
