Hubble Telescope Turns Twenty

NASA (Apr 24) – Twenty years ago today, NASA space shuttle Discovery set Hubble Telescope free from its payload compartment to help man explore were no man has gone before.

The Hubble hasn’t been without its problems with space shuttle launches sent aloft to provide much needed repairs including the repair of a malfunctioning mirror. Overall, the Hubble has outperformed NASA’s expectations.

To celebrate Hubble’s “birthday”, NASA has released a book containing a collection of images transmitted back to earth from its far reaching eye-in-the-sky.

“Hubble: A Journey Through Space and Time” takes an in-depth look at this unique, ground-breaking telescope. It serves as an authoritative account of the observatory, which has revolutionized astronomy and photography. The book highlights Hubble’s spectacular visual legacy in stunning images, and includes what many consider Hubble’s 20 most important scientific findings to date. The images, selected by NASA astronomers, show stars being born and dying; galaxies colliding and reforming; and the young universe in the throes of creation.
