Grass Stashed in Lawnmowers Discovered by Customs and Border Patrol Agents

San Diego, CA (Apr 1) – No April’s fool joke here. Yesterday, CBP agents at the San Ysidro border crossing approached a 1995 Dodge Dakota driven by a 21 year old Mexican male and discovered grass stashed in lawnmowers.

The driver, a member of the SENTRI program, entered the customs inspection station with several gardening tools, and lawnmowers in the bed of his pickup. Information prompted the Border Patrol agent to send the vehicle along to a secondary inspection station.

Upon a cursory search of the vehicle conducted by canine units, officers discovered 25 wrapped packages of marijuana totaling 91 pounds hidden inside of two lawnmowers.

The man, a resident of San Ysidro was arrested and booked into San Diego County jail.

Later that morning, another SENTRI participant was approached at the Otay Mesa passenger port. The driver of the 2008 Ford F-150 pick-up truck was identified as a male U.S. citizen.

Canine units alerted the agents in which prompted further inspection of the vehicle. An intensive examination of the vehicle utilizing X-Ray equipment led to the discovery of 189 pounds of marijuana located in the front, and rear seats, cargo bed, tire well, and spare tire.

Both the truck and marijuana were seized and the male suspect was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center, and his SENTRI privileges were revoked.
