Eyjafjallajokull Volcano No Signs of Ending | Travelers Finally Heading Home

Eruption at Fimmvörðuháls at dusk. - Henrik Thorburn

UK (Apr 25) – Travelers and holiday goers began arriving home this week as Iceland’s volcano still spews ash. Almost 100,000 British travelers have made the exodus from European airports; estimates have nearly 35,000 more still waiting a flight home with thousands more Europeans still stranded around the globe.

Airline industry spokespersons have stated that all of the remaining British travelers should make it home by next weekend, with thousands more European travelers remaining stranded as far away as Thailand. Most airports in Iceland remain closed. Eyjafjallajokull is producing much less ash with no indications that the eruption will be ending soon.

Various air carriers are still dealing with vast numbers of overseas traveler stuck in Africa, New Delhi, Bangkok, and the United States. Those estimates are as high as several hundred thousand.

Scientist are stating that between 150 to 300 thousand tons of carbon dioxide a day are still being pumped into the atmosphere with the good news that, an overall a cutback in greenhouses gases may have resulted with the halting of the literally thousands of air flights per day.

It is believed that as massive and disruptive the volcano was it was only responsible for contributing a minute, less than one third of a percentage, of global emissions of greenhouse gases compared to manmade pollution sources.

Unfortunately, Eyjafjallajokull was not as beneficial in reversing the effects of global climate warming for, it’s ash cloud loaded with sulfur failed to reach high enough into the atmosphere to aid in blocking the sun’s harmful radiation. The most beneficial environmental contribution the volcano had was in grounding so many aircraft responsible for almost 4 times the daily pollution then what Eyjafjallajokull was emitting.
