Yazoo, MS (Apr 24) – A deadly tornado ripped through parts of Mississippi today. Nine people have been confirmed dead. According to the National Weather Service, the 3/4-mile wide tornado touched down in Valley Park, Yazoo City and Durant, Mississippi. It started in Omega, Louisiana and ended east of Starkville, Mississippi.
The owner of Hastee Tastee in Yazoo City, Faye Branum, said she watched the tornado destroy the Burger King then she saw the tornado lift up in the air and yelled “Thank you God, Thank you God” because her building was saved. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, who is also a Yazoo County native, called the tornado “enormous” and “devastating.” The Mississippi Governor ordered the Mississippi National Guard to aid local officials with emergency response. Eyewitnesses reported that the path of the tornado was a half-mile to a mile wide.
Much of Yazoo City, Mississippi was leveled. Many business and homes were destroyed.
