Afghanistan | Five Civilian Casualties, Taliban Commander Captured

Kabul, Afghanistan (Apr 6) – Joint forces are investigating the deaths of four Afghani civilians, the wounding of four children, along with following up leads regarding weapons caches, militant activities from captured Taliban commander.

During an engagement with insurgents firing from a secluded compound, combined forces had called in for air support.  The insurgents within the compound that at the time, combined forces were unaware of the presence of civilians were killed along with two women, an elderly man, and a child. ANSF and ISAF officials have launched an incident assessment team to review the factors leading up to this unfortunate loss of civilian life.

In a separate incident in Kapisa Province, ISAF troops engaged by terrorists resulted in the death of one child and the wounding of three others trapped between the terrorists and friendly forces. An investigation as to the cause of the casualty and injuries is underway.

In a NATO ISAF press release regarding civilian casualties the following conclusion has been released, “Recent UN research confirms insurgents inflict the vast majority of civilian casualties throughout Afghanistan. Their random use of IEDs, suicide bombers and ambushes continue to endanger all of the people of Afghanistan. Afghan and coalition forces continue to work together to eliminate the IED threat.”

In other operations, in the search of compounds in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand Province, intelligence indicated militant activity in the area, security forces detained several suspected militants for further questioning.

In Kandahar, joint security forces captured a Taliban commander involved in a prison attack and assaults on coalition forces. The terrorist also has links to Taliban media efforts. Intelligence leading to his captured indicated militant activity in the Panjavi District culminated in the detention of several other militants.

During a pursuit of a Haqqani sub-commander in Khost, security forces captured militants associated with the group. Intelligence lead forces to the Sabari district in search of militant activity, in addition to the detention of militants, a weapons cache was seized and destroyed.

Two suspected militants were detained by joint security forces following the search of a compound northwest of Kunduz City, no shots were fired.
